Thinking about that Miyazaki quote about creators of anime nowadays being primarily people who just watch anime and not getting external influences outside of anime in comparison to Uematsu growing up deeply on prog, psychedelic, and electronic music.

Flow was made in Blender and cost only $3.7 million -- but it defeated Hollywood at the Oscars.

The movies would've likely still been successful, as even Michael Bay TMNT was successful (Out of the Shadows broke even, but didn't make back its budget), but nowhere to the degree that the Sonic movies are now.
Especially if they had Tails, Knuckles, or Shadow look similar to this
