Forty years ago MLB teams opened their books to an independent economist and were proven to be lying liars who lied.

Until they open their books that way again, let that be your default assumption about any claims they — and their media water carriers — make about their finances.

Been true for several years now that MLB opts to exploit a weird market quirk - that small outlets (Fox Sports 1/2, now streamers) will overpay for a small but intense audience - instead of thinking about the good of the game overall and long-term. Awful for fans, almost certainly bad for MLB.

If I'm reading this right, the extra round of playoffs that are wrecking the regular season are so in demand they will now mostly be on the eighth-most popular streaming platform.

Now the Orioles have Classic Tyler O’Neill and Diet Tyler O’Neill.

Teams are getting better at using the rules to wreck the free market for players. The QO system is brutal for all but the high-end free agents. Feel bad for Trent Grisham, unable to leverage the best year he'll ever have into long-term security. The players need to form a union and fight this stuff.

"It's all about the guys in this room. They're a special group, with so much heart and grit. We knew on draft day that we would win close games by wanting them more, by being a team that loves each other. Let's face it, we're just better people than they are. We're winners."

I get #ncayft, but this is a hoot with Devonta Smith (him, winning) and Jahmyr Gibbs (me, losing) last players going.

You‘d think maybe one time, just once, they’d let Barkley have another shot after falling an inch short of a touchdown.

I may be on Team Take the Points now. Football teams, college and pro, are laughably bad at the goal line. Just hopeless.

It’ll get lost a bit, but days after ripping a reporter Bill O’Brien called for an all-time “this is why we’re 1-9” punt on fourth-and-1. Tech scored on the next play.

Our 6 AM Lyft driver knew the Greyhound route from New Orleans to Atlanta well. He took it many times as a youth to visit his grandpa. The bus line brought back cherished memories.

“So is it, you know, nice?” I asked.

“Oh no,” he replied. “Noooooooooo.”

Until owners open their books, the default assumption should be that they're making money hand over fist and they don't want the players to know it. And opening the books should mean cash flow statements for all affiliated entities, not just showing paper losses for the team.

I went deeper into the at-bats where Luis Ortiz is accused of throwing balls on purpose.

1) These pitches didn't just compromise games. They helped flip them. Twice.

2) It's the player props, man

3) This is NOT a case where legal sports betting improved the situation slate.com/technology/2...
