📢 NEW Will of the Month Post 📢

October's will is an unusual & poignant example of a married woman who made a will

Margery Gadyng died in childbirth in 1540 - she declared her will to the midwife & women attending her, leaving them bequests of ribbons & rosaries

You were blonde woman, thick head of hair, maybe late 40s or early 50s at RDU TSA checkpoint this morning. Traveling with your parents. Handling the luggage, their spatial awareness & strangers’. Got them to the lounge.

Just want to say, I know an eldest/only daughter GOAT when I see one 🫡

Get your proposals in by the end of the month! A title and rough outline is more than enough - and remember to sign up if you just want to be a spectator. We want to make sure there’s enough coffee/pizza/wine for all 💚💚💚
Our brilliant PGRs are at it again! After last year's inaugural and highly-successful brat symposium (organised by CMS PGRs Shauna Roach, Sarah Collinson, Harry Lewis, and Isla Dawson), this year's committee is once again inviting Bristol PGRs to consider how 'brat' connects with their own research.

brat is back, baby. maybe one of my favourite academic events of all time, and the first paper I gave in Bristol to the best audience… it’s time for the remix 💚
Last year’s brat symposium is (and might very well always be) my favourite academic event. Super creative research in an informal, experimental space. Come along, it’ll be a blast! 🍏

So true - but the humanities provides so much more than preparation for the economy: it is a training for the whole of life, not just the job. Every well-functioning civil society needs a critically attuned citizenry.
What HE managers fail to understand is that in the context of the Humanities, ‘employability’ isn’t teaching coding or carpentry, but skills around writing, presenting, reasoning, evaluation, analysis, research etc. In an 80% service economy, these are the skills that fundamentally matter.

Humanities needs working class kids. We don’t see university as a stepping stone to a career and, because of that, bring a completely different attitude to the classroom. Studying English empowered me, but my being there also mattered. I saw (and said) things differently, and that was valuable
‘Priority courses’, give me strength.

Working class kids deserve to study classics and history and art as much as anyone else.
'Graeme Atherton, head of the Ruskin Institute for Social Equity (Rise) at the University of West London, said the policy “is giving with one hand and taking with another” and will “exacerbate” the problems being faced by humanities and arts departments and disadvantaged students.'

Anyone know the collective noun for a reunion of medieval PGRs?!

One of the things we’re proudest of at the CMS is our amazing PGR community! We have such an active, supportive, and accomplished group of PGRs. We can’t wait to see what they get up to this academic year! #medievalsky
