Our crossover session with the Hugo Readalong project is up! Today we're discussing (most of) the 2017 short story list. Come argue about awards from eight years ago like a person with normal hobbies.

Something very very weird happened during the Hugos award ceremony... It's been on my mind for days, and so I wrote this blog: "When People Giggle at Your Name, or the 2025 Hugo Awards Incident"

Hi to our new followers! It was extremely cool to meet some of you at Worldcon.

Short Fiction Book Club is a collection of nerds who love short fiction. Twice a month from fall to spring (outside of our Hugo Readalong project), we pick a few stories around a common theme and discuss them.

This feels like it'd be a neat idea, though.
But it's funny that they hear "Library of Congress" and imagine it must have a Dolly Parton kids' reading room

Combustible planet blood

we should do more than
try conservation efforts
when it's convenient
trying is just resigning
and we don't have time to wait

What can they do?
What will make them #free?

The shadow leaves scarcely now
content to have more brought to it
more sacrificed upon the alter of safety
or so they call it, so they don't have to look their actions in the eye

Is there anything to do
Not for those digested
but for the others?

Dread Nation would be *so much fun* on the big screen!
*clears throat*

Yeah, so, if anyone is looking to take advantage of this zeitgeist with a Civil War/western/zombie horror let me know…

how things fly
unlikely shapes
curve through the air
and return to you

boomerangs
forgive your misses

if only the world
worked like that

I regret
that surviving harshness
means growing harder each day

I remember the softness
of being a child

folding paper
watching things take flight

Singed treetops surround the cave-hole
ground barren for leagues
Fields squander under nature's duress
pastures sit empty
like the people's bellies

Sometimes, the shadow leaves, off finding treasure
or what passes for it
What could be left un-hoarded?

Yet, there is always a
hungry #return

Winter's blanket gone
Spring showers on barren land
Hidden life begins
Beautiful, ephemeral
A colorful eruption

Scales of specie, sapphire-garnished
Yet shadow cast black as ink
From the lair, sulphuric winds
To the lair, sacrificial slaughter and dread-filled tithes

As if that weren't enough
Soaring patrols, no #plan
Just impulsive terror
Missing sheep, absent progeny
Traded for sorrow

Weekend Reading! 📚 SOUR CHERRY by @nassos.bsky.social

Favorites are hard, but William Pauley III has written some incredible Weird fiction. The Ballad of Old Joe Booth is pretty great (along with the rest of the Bedlam Bible series)
Let's do a stupidly huge ebook giveaway. ONE randomly selected winner will receive EVERY ebook we've ever released. Perfect for fans of horror and Weird fiction with a queer, anti-capitalist, anti-fascist edge.

To enter, simply quote-repost with your favorite horror/Weird fiction story! #booksky

I didn't write an award this time, but many of the others in the SFBC did. And they're great! But not as great as the stories we're highlighting

Honestly, this group has some incredible taste in short spec fiction, so if you're looking for some of the best fiction from 2024, check out our awards!
