So, until x-mas I will each day post one verse of the birth story in Luke 2 in reconstructed 8th century Early Old Nordic (500 years before #OldNorse) for your joy & scrutiny. The ”X-mas calendar” will run from Dec 11th (verse 2:1) to verses 2:15-16 on X-mas day, with linguistic commentary.

A new etymology proposed in the Etymological dictionary ”Våre Arveord” was *ailiskō- for ”elske”, related to *ailidaR OIc ”eldr” & East Nylandic ”eild” ’fire’. Monophthongization in ”elska” (with a more complex cluster) has not affected peripheral Swedish ”eild”

An etymology chart zooming in on some North Germanic cognates of the Old English word: ”æiled” ’fire’.
They are based on a verb *ailjanã, from which also the Scandinavian verb ”älska” ’to love’ is derived via *ailiskōjanã.

Love may be a worldwide phenomenon but the word for it sure isn’t. A video in which I take a shot at saying “I love you” in every Scandinavian language (and even Greenlandic and Sámi), past and present, and review the strange history of how we say this. More detailed version: youtu.be/Pc6jEV0wxaI

...this is a very common use of the word, but it is wrong. "Runic" should only be used for the Germanic runes - a very specific and well-defined type of alphabetic writing used by old Germanic peoples. Outwardly, the ancient North-Italic writing systems are in many ways reminiscent of Germanic...

Latin had six noun cases, but in all Romance languages except Romanian, nouns and adjectives only have one singular form and one plural form left. What happened?

This extra large infographic tells you how the Latin case system collapsed – and why it's the accusative case that lives on in Romance.

No, it has one known relative, Urartian. Phonologucal interpretation is helped by it being represented both in Mesopotamian cuneiform and Ugaritic script.

The Catalan word ‘metzina’ means “poison”. It stems from the same Latin word as ‘medicina’, meaning “medicine”.

‘Metzina’ was inherited from spoken Latin, while ‘medicina’ is a late borrowing from written Latin.
Pairs like this are called doublets.

Episode 7 of my series: Catalan.

Next: Galician.

The X-mas calendar ends with the shepherds going to Betlehem to see the newborn.
Reconstructing this Early Old Nordic (650-850) is hard. For explanations see link below.
The markings for length, nasality and vowel qualities illustrate that is an entirely different language from Old Norse.

Here you find the full text with linguistic explanation & discussion.
The text runs interlinearily with Greek, Gothic, 16th century Icelandic and Swedish, and an English translation.
There will be an update of the reconstruction before next X-mas - stay tuned!

So, the chant of the angels before the shepherds belongs very much to the X-mas night and the calendar has an extra night entry:
— ”Glory (δόξα) to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

This x-mas calendar in Early Old Nordic has another night and day to go.
At this stage of Luke 2nd chapter, verse 12, the angel finishes with a piece of guidance:
”And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling
clothes, lying in a manger.”
