2025-44. The Enduring Universe, by Kritika H. Rao - 5/5
Fantastic end to an underrated trilogy!
Science-fantasy full of physics, (Hindu) philosophy, engineering, love and community, a study on consciousness, middle-age marriages/couples, disability acceptance and change, and oh so much more!

2025-43. Maps, annotated, a DK edition - 3/5
A monster of a book I asked for at the library without seeing it, haha, it's basically an illustrated history of maps.
Interesting, but far more detailed than my general interest warrants.

2025-42. Things no one else can teach us, by Humble the Poet - 4/5
Great stories about his life and what he learnt, good and bad events; lots of food for thought about my own life...

I have today off work.
I slept 10 hours straight (minus a quick trip to loo) plus 1 hour of dozing 😶
I guess my body really needed the rest...
And since the weather is ghastly, I'm not going out and I'll be reading and watching TV for the rest of the day 😀

The latest entry in @marklawrenceauthor.bsky.social 's blog is very interesting, about worldbuilding and the existence of several volumes of canon behind each book.
I agree with his conclusion that readers only care about 'feeling' that the background is there, it doesn't mean that it must exist
Iceberg Fantasy
The fantasy iceberg is world, history, character. The greatest proponent of it is JRR Tolkien. He gave us a one fat book (in three volume...

A couple of months ago I didn't renew my subscription to a news/political magazine, it was messing with my mind, unfortunately. Instead, I subscribed to Positive News and what I read actually gives me calm.
This is one of their great stories:
The remote Arctic island, saved by an unshakeable community spirit
North of the Arctic Circle, beyond the maps of ancient mariners, a remote Norwegian island once thought lost to time has found new life in an unlikely industry

Another superb debunk from Emma!
I might pop over to Sheffield soon 😄
It blows my mind that there are real people who see a post like this and actually believe the whole “Christmas is being cancelled by Muslims” BS 🙄

Let’s have a quick look at what’s happening to Sheffield so you can put your Express reading uncle’s mind at ease!😆

I must be the only person in the UK who hasn't seen any series of the Traitors...
I don't know if I've got the premise wrong, but the idea of seeing a bunch of people deliberately lying and cheating to others doesn't appeal at all 😕

The tasks on #WorldsApart really favour some teams, it's not fair!
How can telling if some basic statements are true or false compare with having to find and identify plants in a forest??
And in so many tasks you can never get 4 coins, it's either 3 or 5...

@titanbooks.bsky.social , I was adjusting my shelves and I realised that the last book in Melanie Rawn's "Glass Thorns" series (book 5) was never published in the UK - did the others sell very little?
Is there any way to get it without it coming from the US with crazy shipping costs?
Thanks!

My new-ish neighbours keep having music/radio on all day, really loud 😭
Do I do Brit and suffer in silence or do I go knock and ask them to reduce the volume?
Shall I play the illness card? I don't normally like to do that...

I have to laugh because otherwise I'd cry at how accurate this is.
Thread.
Imagine walking into work and your boss slams a new screwdriver down on your desk, but it has a weird oval-shaped and an odd handle.

"THIS IS IT KID. THIS. IS. IT. THIS WILL MAKE US 10X BETTER. 100x BETTER! BRUSH UP ON YOUR SKILLS KID BECAUSE WE SPENT A LOTTA MONEY TO GET THIS IN YOUR HANDS."
lolsob.
I hate this. Huge companies spend billions on a product that doesn't work. You ask "what does it do" and they say "it will revolutionize 10x everything" and you go "but how" and they say "Look just get trained on it" and when you go "it doesn't work" they go "Just git gud."

2025-41. Before Your Memory Fades, by Toshikazu Kawaguchi - 3.5/5
This being the third book in the series, I feel the formula is getting a bit stale. Maybe wait longer before reading the next one, because the stories are nice and do make you think...
