Home Assistant is set up the same. No one can tell us what to do. Trust and ethics is the foundation of the modern product, news etc organizations while the rest of the world crumbles away with AI slop and enshittification
I know I keep going on about how no one can tell us what to do, but at the end of the day The Verge’s main product is our ethics policy, and I’ve been telling every other journalism exec who’ll listen that we all need to start talking about it more just to differentiate ourselves from creator media

If you're like me and actually like this but want to decouple from Google, hue and other shit look up home assistant.

It's a pretty steep leaning curve but setting up a local hub for control completely decoupled from the internet is nice

I just gotta bite the bullet and deploy it
The Internet of Things ended up being the internet of unsupported products.

Google is ending support for 1st & 2nd generation Nests and completely pulling out of Europe.

Imagine having to replace the thermostats in your home because of a reorg at some big tech meant it was no longer a priority.
Google is killing software support for early Nest Thermostats
No more controlling these “smart” thermostats from a phone.

Playing around with OpenEPaperLink, an alternative firmware for e-ink shelf labels like the ones they use in supermarkets. These guys have made it easy to display other information on the labels, like your Home Assistant data. Very cool!!!

Oh wow look the first commercially available home assistant robot.
And it looks absolutely HAUNTING.

Definitely going to stock up my spares for when I too inevitably do this.
"The fun thing about 3d printing overnight is that sometimes you find out that you didn't."

I lost a part cooling fan and two fan ducts to this. I have spares, cause you always fucking should if they're inexpensive and don't take up a lot of room.

I too have had setbacks in that I managed to get a lot of magnets glued in the wrong way round in my latest 3D print. I am remedying this by more 3D printing! Enjoy your no-life MH Weekend Kitty!

This is not a U.S. Marshal, Federal Protective Service, or any other federal law enforcement officer. This is a private security guard from Triple Canopy. He has no authority to block members of Congress who have oversight of the EPA from entering the building.
We were just denied entrance into the EPA after asking to meet with a DOGE representative. More to come.
