Winter's here, so be on the lookout for "snirt" (snow dirt)!

AKA "brown snow", AKA "brown sugar", we mean that no good mix of snow, dirt, sand, and/or salt that is loose and slushy and can cover icy patches underneath.

It can be dangerous.

Have fun but be vigilant. Enjoy the adventure!

Over the past two years in Winnipeg, 25 pedestrians and cyclists have been killed in motor vehicle collisions. More than one per month.

When do we start genuinely prioritizing safety over vehicle speed in our street design?

It really is just simple geometry.

You cannot build a functional city if everyone brings a 2-ton living room on wheels with them.
The entrance to the 3-storey bike parking garage at Utrecht Central holding 12,500 bicycles. It’s free for the first 24 hours, linked to the station, and used by tens of thousands every day. This is what happens when a country treats bikes as real transport infrastructure, not an afterthought.

Decades ago, I supported mandatory helmet laws for people riding bikes. Then I was convinced by evidence and the bigger picture that such laws are actually counter-productive in many ways. This NZ article explains some.

I support helmets, but not mandatory helmet laws.

Build safe infrastructure.
David Seymour was right to question our compulsory helmet laws
There’s little evidence our mandatory cycle laws improve overall safety, and quite a bit of evidence suggesting they’re doing more harm than good.

A complete, connected, comfortable network of protected bike-lanes is a climate mitigation strategy. It’s a healthy cities strategy. It’s a social equity strategy. It’s an affordability strategy. It’s an economic devt strategy. It’s a smart mobility & space saving strategy.

Etc. Etc. Etc.

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.”

Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life.

Common sense.

Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.
Paris said au revoir to cars. Air pollution maps reveal a dramatic change.
Air pollution fell substantially as the city restricted car traffic and made way for parks and bike lanes.

In a documentary I was involved in, there was a scientist who studied ghost bikes in Germany – and the memorial cards that relatives place on motorways where their loved ones were killed. These places are repeatedly cleared away by authorities and others because they ‘disturb the street scene’.
When Darin Kinniewess's family informed us that a second "spirit bike" had been removed from his memorial site, we decided to try something else.

We hope this small plaque will be a lasting placeholder for the community to honour him and for others to reflect on the ongoing need for safer streets.
