Confia.

Meanwhile, teaching is being undermined and devlaued at our institutions in a frankly historically dangerous way, and as an underpaid contract instructor, having to spend more time and emotional energy finding ways to get through to my students for the same low pay is not sustainable. /8

It takes me 3x as long to grade assignments now, because I have to explain gently and effectively why ChatGPT style writing is boring -- they swim in this stuff now even when they don't use the tools. Maybe no one has even told them their own voice matters, so that is down to us. 3/

Every time I learn about something I would not have guessed we've been doing bad/wrong for decades, the origin is always - ALWAYS! - “some fuckin white guy in the 60s said it one time and an entire industry took it as an immutable truth that never needed to be revisted.”

30 years ago people would have said that about tv and they were about half right at best. these claims are all easy and fun to make but dubious still i think
that's why TikTok is the thing now. little or no reading

That has to be related to the fact that you encounter people on a daily basis who cannot distinguish fiction from reality.

They watch movies and they treat what they're viewing as a documentary of events that happened to a guy they've never met.
They also treat the news the same way.

As an adult learner of various things, it's surprisingly hard to find (paid) people teaching low-level fundamentals in so many things that you need to be good at higher levels. I went back to community college for something and I have a BA. Even there I know I'm missing fundamentals with a 4.0

I think this is the driving force behind the "pivot to video". I have students for whom I can see that reading long form anything is physically exhausting for them. It's tough. I feel for them.

The good news is that schools are shifting back to science-based pedagogy and the young'uns read great.

How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have repeatedly debunked. And many teachers and parents don't kno...

Yeah... From what I can tell, it kinda became the common sense assumption over there after the 2016 election, because a lot of pundits came out strong against "latinx", blaming it and similar woke words for Trump's win. But yeah, it's more of a LatAm thing than a latinx/e person from the US thing.

We use it in Latin America. Either the -x or the -e to make words gender neutral. People from the US seem to think that "latinx" only exists in their country, but it's just not true. Latin American feminists were pushing for gender neutral language for years before the -x caught on in the US.
