"What's the point of standards" is the perfect epitaph for American journalism
“I’ve been hearing that standards will be eliminated or severely cut back. Bari has told people that she wants to get rid of standards and is shocked that they have so much power. She also asked openly, ‘What’s the point of standards?’” one CBS source said.

Turned off the lights, locked the door, and didn't answer the phone.

Now THAT's constituent service.
I went with 40 of my closest comrades to the Portland office of @senangusking.bsky.social to let him know he sold out Mainers' healthcare and starved kids just to fold and get nothing. They turned off the lights, locked the door, and didn't answer the phone.

No chance to some chance?!?!? I can't believe this is real.
"We went from no chance on the ACA Sunday morning to some chance (25%, 50%?) after the vote Sunday night and put food in the mouths of a lot of hungry people," Sen. Angus King writes.

I dunno. Maybe if everyone thinks your technology is shit and will make the world a worse place over the next 10 years we shouldn't invest our entire economy in it? Hard to say.

seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous

BERNIE ON THE *DEAL* with Centrist Dems: “That is a totally meaningless gesture. You can get 100 votes here and it won't mean anything because the House is not going to take it up.”

Who knows what's true, but if this is true, shame on all of these people. My kingdom for elected officials who don't govern based on some vague idea of "what people will do."

You get elected to do the right thing. It's a representative democracy. Act like people should trust you and do good.
MSNBC reported Schumer's office felt that the longer that shutdown went on, the more likely it was that people would start to blame the Dems.

My kingdom for Democrats that don't govern out of fear. I've said it before and I'll say it again: The American people are far braver than their reps.

I still can't believe Mainers didn't even blink at the fact we elected an 80-year-old dude for another six years just because he's got a nostalgic mustache. Didn't even talk about whether may he's not the guy anymore. Just a complete layup.
so currently defectors are:

Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)

This is straight-up childlike in its reasoning. When the Republicans tell them to fuck off and don't extend the subsidies, then what? We wait around for a year and hope the elections go well, while the entire health care system collapses?

Kind of remarkable King was a lead negotiator for the Dems since he’s been voting with the Republicans to reopen the government with no deal from the beginning.

A deal that lets ACA credits expire fails the millions of families counting on us to keep their health care affordable.

Republicans have spent years trying to dismantle the ACA, and pretending Johnson will allow a vote on a clean ACA bill in the House is a fantasy.

I will be a no on this “deal.”

I called and emailed King. I don't know if he cares about constituents or not. I don't know how he makes his political decisions, honestly. Does he really think this puts us in a better place going forward? I guess the details matter.
CNN, CBS, others report that at least 8 Dems have reached a deal to end the shutdown

They're desperate for someone to shoot at them. One of the things that amazes me the most about the whole ICE situation is that with ALL THE GUNS in the United States, there hasn't been a single one of these gunfights you see all the time on the TV. But they'd like to start one!

They can’t.
