So much great stuff to talk about in EP8. Kathy Acker is ... wild. And we do a little lesson on what makes something "gothic." And then look at the very flawed foundations of liberal notions of "freedom." The seabirds are squawking!

Find, like, review, etc., on Apple or wherever you get your pods.

Uploading the podcast in a minute and really struck by Hannah's question: "Why isn't enough to just ... be happy?"

This is a good one, folks.

If you haven't listened to EP7 yet, now's the time!

Or start back at EP1. All we do is talk about the books, so no need to worry that you're "behind," or whatever.

The more we think about it, the more we think "The Rose Field" and the "Dark Materials" world it concludes, has a message that's just incredibly salient. We can't let "progress" and "efficiency" stamp out our imaginations and the ineffable quality that makes us human and capable of love.
Oh, look at that, Episode 7. Right on schedule. Lots of good stuff this episode, but there's a sneaky "Heated Rivalry" chit-chat you won't want to miss.

For the morning crowd: We're closed today.
Ultimately this is what it comes down to for us: We can't go on acting like everything is business as usual, even if Beverly Farms feels as safe and welcoming as ever. We'll be closed tomorrow in protest of the federal government's gross and inhumane law-enforcement overreach (and other things).

Turns out it was just that Libsyn didn't push it to Apple for some reason, and once we fixed that, all the downloads happened, which means no one listens to the pod on Spotify, which is great, because Spotify sucks ass. Carry on.
Any of you podcast knowers have an idea why this episode might be getting blocked or flagged or something? It posted on Thursday and it's got, like, 10% of the normal downloads...

Y'all, EP6 of "Four Books a Fortnight" is dropping tomorrow. So you better make sure you're caught up with EP5!

I'm a third of the way through The Rose Field and I'm already finding myself not wanting to read it quickly because I feel like I'll never get another new word about these characters and I never want it to end.

If you ain't down with Philip Pullman, you ain't down with us.

Oh, did I forget to post the top-selling non-fiction books of 2025? Oops.
January 11, 2026 at 2:11 PM
Huzzah! Our top-selling fiction for 2025. Just one dude! Crazy!

So glad the new pod is resonating with people — the sound effects are so fun! Really should have thought of that a long time ago.

You can probably guess which book gets the Dazed and Confused reference this episode...

Blargh. Gotta do this best-sellers list. Our #1 for the year is ... "the Correspondent."

Just kidding. It's "Make Your Own Comic Adventures" by Highlights Magazine. Did almost $8k in revenue with that bad boy. Don't turn your nose up.

The book bin at the town dump had a TON of great 70s sci-fi paperbacks today, all with their covers cut off. So if you see some influencer doing some art thing with cool 70s sci-fi covers, let me know.

Happy New Year! Yes, we're closed today, but that doesn't mean we didn't have time to post EP5 of "Four Books a Fortnight"!

Sex, Drugs, and Arctic Terns, baby! Oh, and a nice little treatise by @hhharlow.bsky.social on the difference between "romance" and a love story. Loved it!

Man, working in a bookstore at the holidays is awesome. People are so friendly, happy to see you, and there is nothing better than talking about just which book would make a good present. When they find the right book and their face lights up with recognition? Just so great.

To give you an idea of scale, we have about 6,000 books in our store. That is a LOT of books. What a bummer to read about. Hope everyone is alright.

Some great books in EP4! And a bellyflop. And some medicine-taking. Listen up!
