Bookstore in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Established 2021.
Let the lie come into the world; let it even triumph. But not through me.
We are absolutely not the same.
Amazon is helping fund a $300 million build of a ballroom for the White House.

Independent bookstores are donating to food banks and organizations that help with food insecurity.

They are not the same.

Supper club is every Monday from 5-8pm. Get a big bowl of vegan and gluten free beans for $7 or $5 or nothing, whatever you can pay. Also, bring your bookworm brigade bag and get 20% off of all retail items you can fit inside!
Our local bookstore @samizdatbookstore.bsky.social is hosting Monday night supper club. It’s cheap or free if you can’t pay at all. This is why we need bookstores: they’re not just a shop, they’re a community space. There were over 20 people tonight. And we all sat together and talked and ate.

Everything is wrong with this, but on a purely selfish note from a Northern New Mexico bookstore, IAIA is a robust pipeline for authors and poets in addition to being a local information resource. When I’m in the plaza area I talk to their staff (and buy books) and get great recommendations.
Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) is slated to have its entire budget cut. Art is how we imagine ourselves and our future, not just for individual artists but for communities and Indian Country in general. The future is a dark mountain. We need Native Artists to light the way.

We have books on all sorts of topics.
Someone asked us today if we have a banned books section and we were like that’s the whole store.

It’s been our general philosophy that when it’s, for example, Black History Month, we should simply be able to go to the stacks and pull relevant books and make a display, no special orders needed. If we can’t do that, we’ve slipped up along the way and need to reevaluate our ordering.

Valentine’s is coming! Parents need a night out and a night off. Also, the world is on fire! and we all want to do *something*. These two events aren’t related in anything but proximity of timing, but we’re not going to let that stop us!

Also tea. Much of our tea comes from Canadian distributors. We got a big order across the border a couple days ago. But we can’t order massive stock in advance. We don’t know what this means for pricing yet. We are not raising prices in advance, though :)

Blurbs are almost entirely useless and when a cover is particularly beautiful the presence of a blurb ruins it. Unless that blurb is “Daddy’s diary definitely delivers.” Which is on a book we received this week.

Why Simon & Schuster’s Flagship Imprint Won’t Require Blurbs Anymore
In a decision some might call “stunning” or a “tour-de-force,” new S&S publisher Sean Manning has decided to no longer require authors to obtain blurbs for their books. Here’s why.

Hey Los Alamos, uh, good luck on your next travel to the Nevada Test Site?
The Heritage Foundation’s Bob Peters now recommends that if the US cannot develop the ability to conduct an underground nuclear test in Nevada within 3-6 months of an order to do so, it consider withdrawing from the 1962 Limited Test Ban Treaty and resuming open-air testing in Nevada or the Pacific.
