Surreal to read the words of the late Sharon Begley in STAT's obituary of James Watson, whom she describes as legend of science but also a man whose "public and unrepentant racism and sexism ... made him a pariah in life and poisoned his legacy in death"

Yessssss so true!

“Brilliant work happens when you can breathe. When you're rested. It happens when you have time away. When you're healthy. When you have things that push work out of your brain for a while, and other inputs that pull your brain in different directions.”
I really enjoyed this post by @rawsignal.ca against the pressure (in industry, but also very true for academia 🧪🔭) to overwork at the cost of having time to think, breathe and yes, be creative (it is related).

Why I left academia and neuroscience.

This post on Substack has gained a lot of traction. I think many people identify with it.
(Most of my posts are technical tutorials on machine-learning and LLM-mechanisms.)

I heard that students need to have a 1st author paper to get into a PhD program

This is not true in psychology--most students we admit at NYU & most of the students from my own lab who got into PhD programs do not have publications, let alone 1st author publications

An abbreviation (ABB) in a journal article (JA) or Grant Application (GA) is rarely worth the words it saves. Every ABB requires cognitive resources (CR) and at my age by the time I'm halfway through a JA or GA I no longer have the CR to remember what your ABB stood for.
