Tonight we did a Christmas light neighborhood drive around Pasadena / Altadena / San Marino.

The tour started with San Marino's St. Alban's Road, a short but beautiful drive decorated with towering Christmas trees.
Trying to plan out my next few months of coaster riding. Currently sitting at 997 coasters, and hoping to make the debut of Hollywood Drift my #1000. (After that I'll ignore any future "milestones", maybe unless I ever get to 2000.)

I need to find two more before it opens... whenever that might be.

A lot written about how the Ice and Snow World is incorporating new technology like AI smartphone concierges.

Not a lot written about how the -20°F temperatures makes touchscreens a real pain with gloves, and tends to brick any battery-powered devices pretty quickly.

One of my favorite things I did this holiday season was to catch the Winter Wonderland show at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater in Eagle Rock. Insanely cute puppets and musical acts featuring insanely talented puppeteers.

One thing I noticed is there is no new ride hardware announced. The removed rides are making room for themed walk-throughs.

Given Zamperla has all but cornered the kiddie ride market, and their delivery calendar is notoriously busy, this feels like a way to enhance the park on last-minute notice.
Six Flags Magic Mountain announced a new Looney Tunes Land coming Summer 2026. TAZ-mania, Road Runner Ridge, Bugs Bunny Play Park, and Camp Duck Amuck mini-lands are set to retheme the existing kids areas.

The legacy Cedar Fair leadership making one of their first orders of business upon taking control of Magic Mountain to cull a couple of their kids coasters and thus handing the (North American) coaster trophy back to Cedar Point, is one of the more amusingly petty outcomes of the merger.

Art directing on Middle Eastern cultural projects often ends up a lot like this:
a woman is making a funny face with the words " and " behind her
Alt: From Documentary Now's "Original Cast Album: Co-Op" singing "And the brown and the beige and the brown and the beige and brown!"

What little travel for theme parks I can plan is now mostly playing whack-a-mole with announced and anticipated park and ride closures. I drove by Wild Waves a year ago but it was just out of season.

Magic Mountain is removing the Magic Flyer coaster and Tweety's Escape spinning cage ride from the kids area. Two of the more uniquely historic rides at the park, but understandable given their restrictions.

At least that red check on Coaster-Count will no longer taunt me.

Upgraded to a Pixel 10 Pro during a Black Friday deal and I got to test out the camera for the first time at the Huntington Gardens this weekend.

Definitely an improvement given my phone has become my primary camera for the past few years.

I was disappointed at how little Romania's proposed "Dracula Land" theme park has to do with its source material.

But upon further reading, I think they nailed the concept of undead suave aristocratic bloodsuckers preying on the feeble-minded.

10/10 as far as vaporware money-laundering schemes go.

Well shit. Probably the least bad outcome available, as it keeps the legacy film studios separate a little while longer.

RIP Netflix Houses, we barely knew thee.
Netflix announced plans on Friday to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery’s studio and streaming business, in a deal that will bulk up the world’s biggest paid streaming service.

My new favorite term, "slopaganda". Thanks, I love/hate it.

A great read.
Intensification - Kate Crawford - Eating the Future: The Metabolic Logic of AI Slop
AI slop isn’t invested in the order of events or even looking like reality. The slop is not the territory: it just smothers it in synthetic goop. It’s flooding the zone with AI shit.

Her breakdown of how Disney has shifted language from easy terms like “Tomorrowland” to goofy shit like “Galactic Starcruiser,” then forcing influencer marketers to use said terms, is so astute. And I admire how upfront she is that her customer service resolutions are bc she has a social following

Insane how much replay value Jenny Nicholson’s Star Wars Hotel video has. P much the ideal customer (even a former theater kid park employee!) meticulously breaking down how low Disney has sunk into aggressive IP language control, duplicity, and guest-hostile design makes it that much more cutting

Nathan's thread really embodies the spirit of Thanksgiving. (Or at least the food porn...)

Still a couple hours to go before dinner on the west coast and I'm getting hungry.
Well, I can't say this year's Thanksgiving plate was quite as photogenic as the ones from years past, but it was most certainly delicious!

The culmination of nearly two weeks of prep and cooking, I would say everything turned out quite nice indeed!

I thought maybe they picked up the prototype RailRyder from the S&S plant, which would be a pretty big deal for this small park, but no it's a custom RMC Raptor!

Finally a reason to return to Myrtle Beach for the first time since 2008.

a thing that has bedeviled me for some time now is how much space Netflix occupies and how little new it has contributed to our shared cultural language and that’s one of a few things I wanted to get at here
