Peter is a hugger to anyone he's close to, with a firm handshake to anyone else respectful. If you're rude (or worse), you'll be lucky to even have a friendly nod.

How does your character feel about physical touch?

Are they fans of a handshake, hug, pat on the back, etc?

Do they prefer to keep their distance?

Does it matter how close they are to the other person?

There is not much better than describing food. One of these days we'll get an in-universe cookbook done. Just gotta actually write out the recipes proper. For now I'll settle for making my own mouth water.

This is such a good character building scene for Peter. The realization that Dredd is not just his "asshole superior", but a man that actively harmed people, specifically his own family, and is the direct reason he is stuck where he is.

Similar answer to @jonah.nelbrea.com but with Chrono Trigger. One of the first RPGs to ever grace my old tube TV. It was absolutely essential in forming my love for all things time travel, and the feeling that every character matters and should have their own "slice" of the story.

I really enjoy this scene. It's the first big showcase of how firearms work in The Relic in The Fortress, while also being the beginning of another key moment between Peter and Paul (not fully shown here).

I think Clort would be the one with the most to offer. He's seen enough of the world, and would add some levity to anything I had going on. Goblins always want to throw some song and dance into things.

Which of your characters would you turn to for advice?

Does it matter what the advice was on? Relationships? Money? Career? Other?

Is there anyone who's advice you would always do the exact opposite of?

The Road, meets The Gunslinger. There's no hope, nobody is coming to help you, and there's no point in making friends, because they'll all shoot you in the back. There is some backstabbing in #Nelbrea, but the core themes are hope, mutual aid, and the power of your friends. With cowboys.

Share some ANTI-comps (things that are totally OPPOSITE from your WIP)!

You could also try reframing your WIP as a totally different genre. What would it look like if your romance was now horror?

At the beginning? Not at all. Peter has grown up excelling at most things he attempts. However, that only puts a bigger target on his back from the Commanding officers of the Fortress.

I would make the argument that Peter is happy, but absolutely not satisfied.

Dredd is a fun one to write. He's a miserable old man wishing for a past he knows he'll never have, and takes it out on all of the recruits walking through his Fortress. Having Peter and Dredd bump heads constantly makes for some fun back and forth.

Bishop Eulisses Dredd wasn’t always the half-broken Lord of the Fortress. Once, he was the Deacon’s warlord. His Flame, blazing His doctrine across the world. But when the Majeris crept in and hollowed him out, Dredd was sent to be forgotten on Parze.

So far the flashback part has been great, but tough. There really is a lot of back and forth to make sure it makes sense. But it also lets us seed some new things that maybe we didn't intentionally write at first.

#author #writingcommunity #fantasybook
Getting into Part 2 is an interesting one. It's a long flashback, which makes us consistently backtrack to Part 1 to ensure continuity is accurate. It sure is fun, though!

Next update might be a little introduction to Peter's superior:

Bishop Eulisses Dredd

Finally finished with our main draft of Part 1 of The Relic In The Fortress! We could probably edit and re-edit until the end of time. But we're saying it's finished and ready for review by some eyes other than our own.

Feels like the first big milestone!

While the Fortress taught him discipline, it also taught him resentment. He's made a habit of keeping his head down and enduring his superiors abuse, but old habits die hard. Now, with a "pet" cat in tow, and an arm full of relics, Peter just might be ready to make his escape. -pt2

Part 1 Premise

A young soldier manifests a power unlike any magework in Nelbrea, drawing the eye of a tyrant, a goblin prince, and a cat who may not be what he seems.

Peter Chobbler’s white-hot Affinity defies all convention. Is he a pawn in a cosmic game? Or a herald who could change the world?
