I’ve never been so glad to take the bus and subway to work

Before this week I had to go in at 5:30. First bus from my house leaves then so I had to take Ubers in.

Now I can come in at 7, which is a HUGE improvement

I could keep going but that's it for now! Beyblade continues to be a huge highlight for me as a letterer, so I'm going to keep pushing myself and make a good product for all the Bladers checking out the manga <3

In volume 5, it's fun to see my SFX take on an even looser and more hand drawn feel. (You can tell I am obsessed with these let it rips)

I'm 99% sure this shot of Khrome's Bey flying past him and crashing into the jumbotron behind him is a nod to Kai losing to Tyson in the original series in the same way (specifically in the manga)

Very fun page overall where I had to match the curved distortion in perspective with "Dagger Dran", as well as the LET IT RIIIIIP following the edge of the word balloon, perhaps even a bit more than it is in Japanese.

Similar philosophy for this one. No real good way to localize these other than a bunch of elbow grease and very precise SFX and addition of new lines.

(of course, being a digital color asset, there's no good reason it should be flat like this in the first place!)

Removing a whole kana character from a massive color spread like this is particularly time consuming. I could have run the SFX across the bottom, but I remember feeling like redrawing the whole right side of the panel was the worse of two bad options.

These pages were drawn in color originally and then turned into grayscale for the volume release. An extra challenge when it comes to retouching. The original ガキイイン also flows across the page in a way that would be very unnatural in English, so I chose to lean into one reading direction.

Here's one where the flow of the SFX needed to be overhauled a little. In Japanese the コ゚ wraps around Khrome, so I opted to have it come down from the other direction a bit. It's also practical, since I didn't want to have to redraw his legs and placed the W conveniently.

As a reminder, flashback panels are all baked into the art and have to be tracked down and replaced manually to match. And Beyblade has a ton of these!

From this point onward it's pretty much battle after battle. Looking back on these I'm particularly happy with how they turned out. My journey into manga itself began with reading exciting Beyblade battles, so keeping the SFX dynamic and keeping the reader immersed are my priorities.

Gradient screentone SFX aren't super hard to recreate general, but it's always worth making sure the black-to-white transition is roughly in line with the original art, as well as the dot size. It's not something I worry about getting 1:1, as long as it maintains the same feel.

Here's a fun bit, where the original text was already in English, but there's no need to have the Japanese text for English readers. Erasing the JP would leave this awkward white space, so I opted to close the gap. Not the most difficult change to make but should always be handled with care.

At this point I've made it a habit to make sure the "let it rip!"s are just as stylish and exciting as they are in Japanese. Each one is unique!
