The ancient church of St Patrick in Llanbadrig, Anglesey. Information found on https://cemaes.wales/local-places/llanbadrig-church/ Legend says that in 440 AD a celtic bishop called Patrick was travelling from Iona to Ireland when he was shipwrecked off the coast of Anglesey. Having made his way ashore from the small islet now known as Ynys Badrig (St. Patrick’s Island), the bishop took refuge in a small cave with a nearby well. Patrick commemorated his escape from danger by founding the original Eglwys Llanbadrig – Saint Patrick’s Church. St Patrick’s Cave is still there, marked by a plaque up on the cliffs overlooking the spot, but the way to the cave itself is steep and dangerous.

This photograph captures a haunting architectural perspective through deteriorating barrel-vaulted chambers in the Alpine House at Beelitz Heilstätten, Brandenburg, Germany. Three successive arched passages recede into atmospheric depth, each framing the next in diminishing scale, creating powerful linear perspective toward the distant terminus. The masonry surfaces exhibit extensive spalling and delamination, where render and plaster have separated from underlying brickwork in irregular patches. This creates a mottled palette from warm ochres and pale creams to exposed terracotta brick and sections overtaken by dark olive-green and blackish algal growth. The passage’s focal point emerges at its end: a luminous oval window glowing with pale, diffuse daylight that appears nearly white against surrounding gloom. This elliptical opening creates a beacon-like quality emphasizing the tunnel’s depth. The zones transition through graduated tonal values, from warmer, artificially-lit foreground through shadowed middle passages tinged with cool green, to the final vault where distant daylight asserts its presence. This chiaroscuro effect balances decay’s melancholic qualities with the promise of emergence suggested by that terminal luminosity.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Our photograph shows the upper portion of a historic stone building in Valletta, Malta, viewed straight on, with a strong sense of symmetry and warm colour. The façade is made of honey-gold limestone, typical of Maltese architecture, its surface marked by age with subtle stains and texture. At the centre is a grand entrance framed in pale stone, with layered mouldings that step inward toward a deep red double door at the bottom edge of the image. Above the doorway is a decorative wrought-iron grille, and above that, a small circular window set into the stone, like an eye looking out from the wall. Directly above this round window is a traditional enclosed wooden balcony, known locally as a gallarija. It is painted a muted plum or dusty purple. The balcony projects outward and rests on three chunky stone brackets. Its upper half is made of several rectangular glass panes that reflect the blue sky, while the lower half is solid wood paneling in the same purple tone. On either side of the central doorway are matching open balconies with ornate black wrought-iron railings. Each balcony fronts a tall window with purple shutters; some shutters are partly closed, creating alternating bands of shadow and colour. The window frames and shutters echo the same purple as the central balcony, tying the whole façade together. Above and around these elements, more shuttered windows continue the rhythm of the building, reinforcing its symmetry. The overall palette is warm gold stone contrasted with rich purple woodwork, black iron railings, and hints of sky blue reflected in the glass. The impression is of an elegant, well preserved Maltese townhouse. Solid, formal, and richly coloured, with strong vertical lines and balanced proportions, capturing Valletta’s blend of Baroque influence and Mediterranean warmth. Finally, our picture is finished with a simple, white border frame.
