Catherine Connolly’s inaugural speech spoke of inclusivity - but what of those of us with only the cúpla focal, destined for the Gael-gulags? My latest in The Sunday Times.

"When The Sunday Times columnist Alison O’Connor warned that the rise of the Irish language might be “creating a them-and-us situation,” she revealed less about the language than about the anxieties of Ireland’s establishment commentariat."

Déardaoin an tseachtain seo chugainn. Bhí faitíos orm anuraidh agus an teideal 'Léachtóir in Oideachas STEM' orm go hoifigiúil nach mbeinn in ann do na ceisteanna agus go mbeinn náirithe, ach bld tháinig neart stuif ón Ardteist ar ais chugam, agus bhí an-craic againn.

Strongly feel that adults learning a new language should be treated like babies doing the same thing. Look, I'm going through a developmental leap this week, so I'm just going to be more cranky, hungrier, cry a lot at night etc.

It shouldn't need to be explained to anyone, so soon after the Soldier F verdict, why Irish people might not want to be socially obliged to donate to a charity committed to uncritically commemorating all British wars, including Iraq and Northern Ireland, and financially supporting their veterans.

The "why do you care so much about the NY mayoral election" takes strike me as pretty obtuse. The world's sole superpower is being taken over by fascists, and this was part of the struggle to define what the opposition to that will look like. That obviously has major implications for all of us?

The Government lurching to the right was 100% inevitable after the presidential election; this is how they deal with failure rather than any form of reflection.

But I'm fairly shocked at the speed and vigour with which they've done it, not letting the attempted murder of refugees get in their way

79% of homes sold in Dublin this year were bought by landlords, 75% by large landlords. About 1 in 5 TDs are landlords.

This is disgusting dog whistling. The problem has never been people seeking asylum. The problem is people seeking to endlessly profit from folks just looking for a home.
🗣️ "The one thing that there is a problem with is housing right across the state, and the more that come to seek asylum, the more pressure it puts on that system.” - Fianna Fáil Minister of State Timmy Dooley

A real leader with courage & backbone and would have been out on the plinth at Dáil Eireann at 1000 this morning saying that this has gone too far and has to stop.
They would have called out the tech giants & the liars who use their platforms to spread hate.
Ireland clearly has no such leaders.
