This is very, very good, and exceptionally unsettling. My favorite sort of cultural criticism (being that which is also art criticism).

The spaces described are both unheimlich/uncanny and BLEAK AS FUCK, which is (I think) central to the argument, & also utterly grim as sociocultural commentary.
Over the past few weeks, HiLoBrow has run installments of my long essay “Without Care,” which maps out a 21st century gothic that I started calling The Devoid. All four installments are now live and you can read the whole thing here; enjoy!

This has become one of a handful of central pillars of our overall strategy. Expect more of this.
As an obsessive collector, it thrills me to see publishers like @badhandbooks.bsky.social, @valancourtbooks.bsky.social & @shortwavebooks.bsky.social taking steps to keep authors' back catalogs in print ❤️

I can only compare it to reading Stephen King’s “The Jaunt” for the first time: mind-bending existential dread, with a twist of PKD. It’s buried in an obscure literary journal from 2011 & has never been reprinted: @sgj.bsky.social’s “The Lazarus Complex.” Link to buy ebook below. For cool kids only.

Signed and sharing. The principle here matters, and it should be beyond dispute: if a person’s labour is required by a business in order to make money then they should pay that person for their labour.

Interesting read. Thoughts?

I also think the title is misleading. The article is focused more so on the success models of self-published authors. What are there numbers? What are they doing?

Ultimately — they’re listening to their readers.

‘More are published than could ever succeed’: are there too many books?
While some say the rise of the self-publishing model is damaging the industry, others feel it gives authors a fairer deal

A valuable reminder from @crobertcargill.bsky.social: your favorite author’s, screenwriter’s, or artist’s Patreon is a GREAT way to directly support them, and often comes with exclusive goodies. I subscribe to @lairdbarron.bsky.social’s Patreon, along with 830 other fans! www.patreon.com/LairdBarron
By the way, many of your favorite film writers have Patreons, Substacks, Koffee accounts and the like. Paying to support your favorite writers not only fills the world with great writing, but keeps those writers from having to work shit gig jobs to pay the bills.

Check their pages or ask them.
