Hello if you're new here, I'm a disability rights journalist, activist and author. Currently write for @thecanaryuk.bsky.social and my disability rights history book, Ramping Up Rights is also out now. AND of course I'm dog mam to Rusty (pictured)

I had a taxi driver tonight tell me that he thinks 20-30% of all disability benefit claims are fraud. I told him the actual figure was around 4%. He didn’t believe me and changed the subject.

The thing is the actual figure is less than 1%, but I knew he wouldn’t believe that.

Local authorities spend £150 MILLION a year fighting SEND parents in appeals and tribunals. That money could've supported 26,000 kids. Oh, and their success rate is less than 1%

By me for @thecanaryuk.bsky.social

www.thecanary.co/uk/analysis/...
Councils spend over £150 million a year trying to stop disabled kids getting support
Local authorities are supposed to help the parents and families of SEND children. But many are failing in their duties entirely

Lord Falconer, sponsor of the Assisted Dying Bill, said people being too poor to live shouldn't stop them seeking an assisted death. Yes really

Me for @thecanaryuk.bsky.social www.thecanary.co/uk/analysis/...
Labour peer just let slip he thinks poor people should be allowed to use assisted dying
When you're so determined to push through an assisted dying bill that will kill so many, what's a few benefit scroungers anyway?

Your yearly reminder that “Blue Monday” was made up by travel companies to sell more holidays at the point of the year when we’re all poorest and the weather is shit. Depression is real all year round.

Plenty has been written about the appalling findings of the inspection of Derwentside IRC - but this, from @rachelcdailey.bsky.social, really sums it up:

Inspection finds vital needs ignored at UK's only female detention centre
The detention centre's troubling practices raise serious concerns for women wellbeing and mental health, an official inspection has found

Why did the Mirror elevate a petition to make benefits a prepaid card? The answer will (not) shock you.

Me for @thecanaryuk.bsky.social www.thecanary.co/uk/analysis/...
The Mirror just did the DWP's job for them in turning the public against benefit claimants
The Mirror are supposed to be a left-wing newspaper - so why are they trying to crawl up the arse of the DWP?

The DWP are bragging about doubling PIP reassessment figures. But they're hiding the fact new claimants are left in limbo for longer as a result. Oh, also that the success rate has fallen dramatically. Me for @thecanaryuk.bsky.social
www.thecanary.co/uk/analysis/...
DWP PIP reassessments double, at the expense of new claimants
DWP try to brag about how many claims they've processed - but that's only because they had such a huge backlog in the first place

Timms Review still hasn't appointed a steering committee, despite the review being supposed to be completed by the autumn. Apparently, it will still be co-produced with the disabled community. Aye sure it will, lads www.gov.uk/government/p...

Lot of people (men) waste their time and mine telling me the government and media haven't deliberately turned the public against disabled people. Lemme save you the trouble lads, I literally wrote the book on it. And I report on it nearly every day.

"The bias we see on The Traitors only highlights just how discriminatory society is on the whole"

I wrote about the unconscious racism and ableism on The Traitors for @thecanaryuk.bsky.social www.thecanary.co/trending/202...
The Traitors just exposed how racist and ableist the UK really is
So far this series, both of the people who have gone home have been women of colour - and it's not new on The Traitors

2025 was a huge one. Launching my book into the world, touring, surrounded by my incredible community both new and old. Running a huge campaign to stop benefit cuts, grieving, going full time at The Canary. And so so many dog walks and cuddles. Here's to 2026

The hill I will die on is that Muppet Treasure Island is better than Muppet Christmas Carol, but there's more nostalgia attached to MCC because we watch it yearly.

Sure, Caine is unreal as Scrooge, but he's no Tim Curry as Long John Silver, is he?
