Campaigning collaboratively, locally and nationally, to transform asylum in the UK.

When irresponsible politicians try to divide our communities, what do we do? We speak up, we stand together, we stay strong.

We are, and always will be, an island of solidarity, not of strangers.

How many people have died because the UK won't give them a safe route to seek sanctuary?

The shocking truth is, we don't exactly know. Our Government refuses to keep an official record of the people who die trying to reach safety here.

Adopting a Denmark-style immigration model is a dangerous new low from our Government. Pushing temporary status, harsher family reunion rules and “parallel society” labels throws basic rights under the bus in a bid to win cheap votes.

From 'one-in-one-out' to another bizarre scheme: this time keeping families apart & reducing support for people fleeing war.

A better asylum system doesn't need to be this complicated. Just let people work, process their claims, and stop wasting millions on expensive cruelty.

The UK Government count applications, decisions, and removals.

But they don’t count the human cost of a system that forces people into danger to seek safety.

A humane asylum system would protect lives, not end them.

While headlines focus on how many people claim asylum in the UK, there's one number that's not even officially counted:

The number of people who die while trying to seek sanctuary here.

We know our policies kill people. Their deaths must not be ignored.

How often do we have to hear about the disgusting conditions people endure in converted hotels before our leaders stop spreading the "luxury accommodation" lie?

The Government knows people are suffering in hotels - to suggest anything else is shameless scapegoating.
Inside the UK’s ‘luxury’ migrant hotels
This week, the prime minister’s official spokesperson suggested migrant hotels are ‘luxury’ places to live. But with rodent and slug infestations, substandard food and large families packed into…

Rania has so many skills to offer - but she's banned from using them while awaiting her asylum decision. Today, the House of Lords debated a vital change to force Parliament to hear evidence about the impact of this absurd work ban.
The Government must listen to people like Rania and #LiftTheBan

This afternoon an incredibly important principle is being debated in the House of Lords

We know people die at our border & in our asylum system at a horrifying rate, but shockingly the govt does not record how many, who, or how.

Human being belong in communities, not camps. And our Government knows it. They said they'd shut the camps and stop wasting millions making people seeking sanctuary suffer - so why are they bringing this failed plan back now?

We know people seeking asylum are dying: but Government won't even record their deaths. We can't save lives without knowing how people are dying & why.
Today, Lords debate a Borders Bill amendment to ensure these deaths can't be swept under the rug.

Frightened children seeking safety in the UK are going missing. Many are likely to have been targeted by traffickers.

Children who asked for our protection are being abandoned to exploitation - it's absolutely disgraceful.
More than 50 child asylum seekers still missing after disappearing from Kent care
Council data obtained by the Guardian shows 345 children have gone missing in recent years, many probably taken by traffickers

It's right to be angry about asylum accommodation. But too often, that anger is directed at people seeking safety - not the broken system that they're forced to navigate.

This brilliant guide explains the real issues in asylum accommodation, and how to change the conversation:

Fantastic to see MPs engaging with the crucial importance of regional, place based responses to the very specific challenges new refugees face. Congratulations to @boaztrust.bsky.social on their excellent report about this 👇
Earlier this week, several of the team from Boaz travelled to Parliament to meet with MPs and share our recent report (From surviving to thriving: preventing homelessness in Greater Manchester among people recently granted refugee status).

If you care about human suffering, military asylum camps are a terrible idea.

If you care about taxpayers' money, military asylum camps are a terrible idea.

So why is the Government about to open more military asylum camps?

To our community: thank you for raising up this statement and making it headline news.

To the Home Office: It's time to do better. It is not illegal to seek safety. The government must stop whipping up the same hatred we have seen erupt outside hotels, endangering the people forced to live in them.

THREAD
A week ago, we published this statement by the Greater Manchester Asylum Hotels Group. The response has been overwhelming. The group has had many messages of support from our local area and beyond, and people have been inspired to share the message far and wide in their own communities.
Asylum seekers, housed in hotels in Manchester, are reaching out in their own words to address the concerns of the local community.

Please take a minute to read their letter, & share it with the people in your life who need to hear the truth about the people they are protesting.

Refugee voices must be at the heart of our narratives - not just as subjects, but as the storytellers.

Our campaigns manager, Dr Allan Njanji, writes powerfully about what real representation means:

During the period that I was an asylum seeker, I realised how powerful the media was in shaping how people like me were seen. The stories told about refugees often shape how the public reacts, how…
