While I’m alarmed at the sheer scale of unbudgeted funds in the PHB sub funds, I think the City Administrator’s memo today meets the mark in terms of responsiveness and transparency. It tells us the unvarnished truth that a serious problem exists and acknowledges need for audits.

We cannot have normal responses in abnormal times. This moment requires incredible imagination, leadership, and a willingness to step outside the bounds of normalcy to protect everything we hold dear.

Today, 31 unions & labor organizations representing over 130,000 workers in Portland and OR sent a letter to @mayorkwilson.bsky.social & District Attorney Vasquez demanding that they enforce the law and get justice for the children, elderly, & working people tear gassed by ICE on 1/31.

The oversight resolution from me, Councilor Green, and Councilor Avalos passes!

Aye - Avalos, Smith, Pirtle Guiney, Kanal, Green, Morillo, Koyama Lane, Dunphy

Nay - Ryan, Clark, Novick, Zimmerman

Portlanders deserve transparency about public dollars, I hope this is the beginning.
If City Council does not have an accurate an reliable accounting of funds to make decisions for what services we save and cut, we cannot do our jobs.

Council must exercise our oversight powers to prevent this from happening again, and I will strongly support Councilor Green’s oversight resolution.

Shout out to @councilorgreen.bsky.social for pushing around transparency. Absurd that 20 million plus can mysteriously be found after budget negotiations. Every councilor should be supporting your moves for transparency.

My entire life in elected office is saying something behind closed doors that makes other electeds roll their eyes or be dismissive and then a few months later they match my stride / pace / energy because that’s what it takes to meet the moment we’re in.

We are at a crossroads. The Police Union can choose to stand with Portlanders, to stand against fascism, or they can continue to obstruct policies that would reign the feds in because they see a kinship with corrupt law enforcement and not with the good people of our city.

There is a choice here.
The current Portland City Councilors who are endorsed by the police union are:

Smith (D1), Ryan (D2), Novick (D3), Zimmerman (D4), Clark (D4)

Listing them because the Portland Police Association is making it a fight to have a masking ban (for law enforcement) and a tear gas ban.
Please list the swing vote councillors specifically so people know who to contact. With everything going on in the country right now, it's hard to keep up with who is doing what, especially now that there are so many of you.

Make no mistake, we are now seeing white American citizens being murdered by law enforcement because we never truly addressed the way our law enforcement treats Black Americans.

If we do not help each other, it’s only a matter of time before we all lose.

Our liberation is tied together.

Its so refreshing to hear @pnwpolicyangel.bsky.social lay it all out in directly political terms. The vote for council president is political. Its just dishonest to pretend otherwise.

Just a sickening amount of open prejudice here. The best rebuke of these sentiments would be for councilors to reject money from these clowns and elect @councilorkanal.bsky.social council president.
The Mercury has obtained a series of images of group messages that show racist, sexist, and homophobic tropes used by a local developer and other local conservative political activists during a council president election. Readers may find this content offensive.

Let 2026 be the year of actually attending your local DSA chapter general meeting, finding a working group you align with, and if it’s not for you, trying something else. We’ve gotta leave behind “I told you so-ing” about how effed everything is in 2025.
And for those who don’t know, there is both a low income option and an entire fee for those who simply cannot afford ~$27. No one is judging you for this, what matters is that you get involved. We have unhoused members in my chapter, this is a movement for everyone.
