The US government just admitted to a federal court that it deported a father by mistake. It sent him to an el Salvadoran torture chamber and separated him from his US citizen family. Several DOJ lawyers have just now argued that the courts lack power to bring him home.

British institutions came through too, despite some intense and sustained pressure. Just been reading the bit of Tim Shipman's latest where Johnson and Cummings try to get Cabinet colleagues & Civil Service to break law, and they are all, immediately: "Nope. Not doing that. Do that & you're toast."

If judges are doing their job properly (i.e. sentencing according to the law, impartially) then it shouldn’t matter whether they are inflaming tensions. One could argue that deliberately acting in such a way as to avoid inflaming tensions would be a serious dereliction of their duty.
