Oxford University’s Prof Miles Hewstone led Department's Athena SWAN application from 2012–2014☹️

He's now been named in sexual harassment allegations

Athena SWAN Awards are meaningless

They're no guarantee of a safe or equitable workplace

Universities & sex pests know how to game the system

As an undergraduate placement student, when I was working at Oxford, I was (gently) discouraged from working with Miles Hewstone. Back then, I didn't fully know why, but I'm grateful for the solidarity expressed from those more aware of his harassment. Whisper networks in academia are invaluable.
One of the giants of social psychology was a serial sexual harasser.

This new report reveals how Miles Hewstone touched, bullied, and sexual harassed numerous women during his 18 years at the University of Oxford. It's amazing how often bullying and sexual harassment go together in academia.

Oxford Professor Miles Hewstone — exposed for sexual misconduct — remains a Fellow of the BritishAcademy

Others with proven records of bullying / misconduct are Fellows

The Academy has a code of conduct. It never enforces it, which is exactly why nothing ever changes

So fucked up. It's been disheartening to learn how many have been affected by his long history of harassment. I only learnt about this at the end of my studies, and only thanks to colleagues who broke the department's request to be silent about it.

My wife was sexually harassed by Miles Hewstone as a phd student. He was still asked to review her (and other women he harassed) for jobs and promotions. This is so fucked up.

Thankfully, she and many other women testified against him and something was finally done. This is her take on his case:

knowing many directly affected, I personally asked some senior male colleagues to speak out about this during my earlier years as a professor, as i felt too vulnerable due to my stage of career.. it was shocking how much this was 'common knowledge' among women and how few male colleagues knew 😔
More voices from those also affected by Miles Hewstone‘s behavior, hitting walls when trying to be heard. Katherine Griffiths from @bloomberg.com gave everyone a voice that can no longer be silenced.

If academic misconduct isn’t dealt with properly, it escalates & problems become larger

Oxford University is learning this the hard way

Spending public money on aggressive lawyers specialising in “reputation management” doesn't work

I can’t imagine what it was like to be a victim of Hewstone, but I recognise how important this article is for the women he harassed. At the same time, I’m shaken that our community stayed silent for so long. I have deep respect for the women who exposed his wrongdoing.

What I found especially shocking was a comment from a senior professor who knew details: “But he’s stopped now, so you’re both fine, right?” (He also started new collaborations with Miles Hewstone when he was on his way out of Oxford). Insulting.

Great news: finally Miles Hewstone is exposed. I stopped citing him years ago, I warned friends/colleagues when I saw them publishing together, I informed as many people as possible about him. We all did. Had this piece been published 15 years ago, everyone would have already known. Shame on Oxford.
