Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

Classics factions:

(1) Owning Loebs is stupid because they’re online; (2) Loebs are elitist because they imply that Classicists need to know Latin / Greek; (3) Loebs are an embarrassment because they imply that Classicists don’t know Latin / Greek very well; (4) Loebs look pretty on the shelf.

Man I'm pretty drunk but I sure do love America

All its low-down dirtiness and cosmopolitism and revolutionary ideas about souls created equal by God with the inalienable human right to rule themselves

This messy beautiful place. No one can talk me out of my love for this stupid fuckin country

👇 Not only is this true, it is literally the only non-revolutionary path to a political transition. There is no option for a regime change where your only allies are the people who always shared your values!
People getting mad here about anyone saying it's good that MTG and Trump are fighting. I teach democratization every semester. The first slide says 'elite fracture.' That's always where it starts. It's good when people with bad politics are fighting one another.
I do not regret to inform you that we are going to win

Did the ancient Greeks develop concepts such as the rule of law, accountability, public goods, equal redistribution based on taxing the rich, because of the logic of republican government, or because they had experienced first hand the horrors and outrage of autocracy ?

This story is extraordinary even by 2025 standards. Marco Rubio, the nation's top diplomat, made a deal with Bukele and agreed to renege on informant agreements in a years-long DOJ investigation into MS-13, totally undercutting credibility of such agreements.

Rubio promised to betray U.S. informants to get Trump’s El Salvador prison deal
To secure U.S. access to President Nayib Bukele’s notorious CECOT prison, Rubio agreed to turn over several MS-13 leaders central to a long-running Justice Department investigation.

This is correct, in part - as the grim, military historian in me feels the need to note - it is psychologically much harder to get soldiers to open fire on people they view as 'respectable.'

And I dread, with grim increasingly certainty, that we are headed to a point where that matters.
protests against this government should include white Boomer grandmothers who meet for pilates class, get a pitcher of mimosas & walk together to the public space

we need people in the street who think everyone can talk their way out of a speeding ticket, they're key to winning

I think the risk now is greater than that of 60s state repression. There are parallels in US history—60s/ early 70s, 1930s, 1870s, but to state the obvious 2025 is 2025.
It shouldn't escape notice that Trump explicitly threatened to use *the state* to target anyone he and MAGA scapegoat for Charlie Kirk's murder. We really could see Stephen Miller and Kash Patel use the FBI for 60s-style domestic persecution.

Some thoughts on that:
