Experimental evidence that students are more likely to contest grades when they are delivered by an evaluator with a female-sounding name.

"These findings suggest that women in evaluative positions face disproportionate resistance when delivering negative assessments."

I'm imagining an instructor somewhere making a syllabus with chat gpt, assigning reading from books that don't exist

But the students don't notice, because they are asking chat gpt to summarize the book or write the essay

i wish it had taken longer for this to become literally true
The syllabus is posted online and the papers become part of student portfolios; crawled for citations, the books are listed on authors Wikipedia pages.

Before long search engines are showing snippets: "Jorge Luis Borges, best known for works like The Coalescing of Ephemeral Objects"

Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

Academics and technologists are sounding the alarm about a growing crisis in scholarship as we know it: AI-generated citations of nonexistent papers that have infested real journals. Despite being fake, the sources are widely assumed to be authentic the more they appear in published literature.
