in light of today's events, i want to share a story i was told during a study abroad summer in italy, where i took a class on the rise of fascism.

the picture below is the site of a mass grave. captive partisans were brought here by nazis, forced to dig, and then executed on the spot.

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath—
America will be!

Signs about the history of slavery in the U.S. and the 9 people George Washington enslaved are being removed right now at the President’s House Site in Philadelphia, across from Independence Hall, months after the Trump administration threatend to do so.

How far we have not come in 250 years.

Seeing the Bluesky resistlib machine valorize Philly's corrupt grifter payola cosplay sheriff for holding an entirely meaningless, self-aggrandizing press conference makes me want to walk into the Delaware and become a trout.

Well Vanguard... I appreciate the effort, but... I'm not sure that's correct.

Have almost finished Jane Jacob's The Death and Life of Great American Cities and I am obsessed

I'm sorry in advance to anyone who now has to deal with me constantly pointing at literally anything and saying "Jane Jacobs would have had a lot to say about THAT"

A huge amount of useful research and software that has nothing to do with LLMs is being branded as "AI" in an attempt to ride the hype/secure funding/make money.

When the next AI winter hits, a lot of it will be abandoned or starved of funding. The garbage is going to destroy legitimate CS.
This is one of the biggest problems with so-called "AI". EVERY branch of computer science and thought ever accomplished is now included as part of "AI". It's a gigantic hoax. Guess what? Computers, research and algos all existed before the current hoax.
Last month, @theguardian.com framed this historical event project the same way; minimizing the years of archival work, the interviews etc it took to be able to do this.

Instead ‘AI solved this historical problem!’

@zachweinersmith.bsky.social this feels very relevant to your interests. Poetry as an attack vector to jailbreak LLMs
This study show that using poems to jailbreak LLMs is... super effective? What the heck.

Governor Shapiro very clearly does not care about public transit, which by extension means he does not care about Philadelphia.

He probably takes our support for granted. Buddy, I've got bad news for you.

We leave for 日本 水曜日 and 私は 日本ご れんしゅうしました for the last few 月 and I've made 少し progress but I feel like it's not enough… I'm sure I can cram the rest of the entire language in in the next 24 hours. Right?

That's definitely a reasonable plan that will set me up for success right???

Jaya's last piece for Eater is incredible: so perfectly captures the arc of cultural change regarding food we've all lived through the past 20 years.
Here it is, my last piece for @eater.bsky.social: my treatise on the last 20 years of food culture, and how food turned into fandom. I really hope you read it. www.eater.com/food-culture...

Sometimes you spend an hour tracking down the source of a tumblr post and fall down a rabbit hole of stock photo websites that scrape the public domain database of the art institute of chicago's collection to sell the images for money
