As we remember the discover of the double helix, it is worthwhile to read nature‘s article on Rosalind Franklin www.nature.com/articles/d41...
What Rosalind Franklin truly contributed to the discovery of DNA’s structure
Franklin was no victim in how the DNA double helix was solved. An overlooked letter and an unpublished news article, both written in 1953, reveal that she was an equal player.

Condé Nast’s folding of Teen Vogue into Vogue is “clearly designed to blunt the award-winning magazine’s insightful journalism at a time when it is needed the most," Condé United, @nyguild.bsky.social say.

Change throttles "staff diversity and [mutes] the magazine’s progressive political bent."
As Condé Nast Folds Teen Vogue Into Vogue’s Website, NewsGuild Condemns the Plan
The union, which reps staffers, says the move was "clearly designed" to blunt the journalism of the brand, which has leaned in to progressive politics.

In the 2 weeks after Mamdani won in June, 10k ppl signed up with @runforsomething.net to consider a run for local office - our biggest surge *ever*. Like it or not (& I do!!) he's shaping the future of the Democratic Party.

If you want something different, get other people to run.

On Teen Vogue: It's an amazing publication full of talented journalists. It offers so much value. It's clear the monied interests in media aren't interested in preserving that value, especially if it threatens the status quo that undergirds their wealth. Capitalism and journalism are enemies.

Great thread. The news this afternoon that the politics section was axed upset me, then the weak tea that they'd now focus on career content (what? homemaking and childrearing?), but the very worst: no more Black women at Teen Vogue. What teen these days wants a mag with no Black women voices???
I've been thinking about #TeenVogue this afternoon in the wake of the publication laying off its entire politics staff and why its political coverage has been so successful across such a broad spectrum of readers. And I think it's precisely because they didn't try to speak to everyone. /1

What!?!?! There are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue!?!?!

Condé Nast is dead to me.
thank you for all the support; the statement from our union is now live here with some more reporting.

now that this is public I can confirm that the majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. there are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue.

It is very clear the gutting of Teen Vogue is about silencing their excellent political coverage. Corporations want you uninformed and shut off from meaningful journalism. And they’re staggeringly successful at it so far.
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

dissatisfied by the New York Times coverage of Zohran Mamdani?

great news! I talked to the guy Thursday about his campaign’s success at bringing community together beyond this election, and contextualized how it’s potentially shifted youth engagement with politics by simply listening @teenvogue.com
Zohran Mamdani's Establishment-Fighting Campaign Built Community for Young People
“What Mamdani has done is not only inspire and mobilize young people, but he has exposed the establishment and some of their calcified views of participation and inclusion.”

That the verb here is "took" is tragic.
Teen Vogue took young people seriously. It's impossible to overstate how important, how rare, and how profoundly needed that is.

Walmart, McDonalds and Amazon are the largest employers of people who require SNAP assistance.

The CEOs earned between 18-40 million last year, 1000x their median employee income.

They took billions in profits, while their workers relied on SNAP to survive.

WTF @teenvogue.com ???

I have been telling people of all ages (I'm 48) for years how robust your news reporting is, especially politics. And that you're one of the few legacy media entities left that tells truth to power.

Why? Who owns you?

The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion.

The entire bottom 50% of America is worth just $4.2 trillion.

Read that back.

When 400 people control more wealth than half a country’s population, we have a very serious problem.
