The drunk uncle theory.

You don’t argue with the casually homophobic uncle at Thanksgiving dinner to change his mind; you argue so that the closeted cousin at the kids table knows there’s safe people and better possibilities out there
agree with this (hah) but also think a particular mistake the left made for a long time online, and still makes to an extent, is failing to understand that the person whose mind you may actually change is the one reading the argument you're having, not the one you're arguing with
The secret to engaging in social media debate is knowing you will never win anyone over. The best you can hope for is to have people who already agree with tell you you're awesome. You might great a dopamine thrill from the righteousness of your anger! Fine benefits, all. But you will never win.

just learned the yiddish word fartsuker (פֿאַרצוקער) which means DEVOURER, PREDATOR and has nothing to do with being a sucker of farts

For all the formal documents of my Hermetic Synaxis stuff I've currently written, the page count is ~700, word count ~244k. (Still have a few docs left to finish.)

(I mean, just my lecture notes for what I've gone over *so far* are at 122pp., 43818 words, across 19 lectures, each ~1.5hrs long.)

But it should be obvious (is it not obvious these days?) that the accompanying responsibility that comes with that is that we, the public historians, have a responsibility to *actually read* the texts we are claiming the privilege to interpret for others

One of the privileges of being an author (yes, even of blogposts) is to be able to say 'I read X, Y and Z difficult/boring/inaccessible text so you, the busy reader, don't have to'. That's what public historians do; we have the privilege of interpreting our research for the general reader

And most importantly, *why are you writing a blogpost about a text you didn’t have time to read?*

Just stopped reading a blogpost after the author admits (*openly admits*) that they didn’t have time to read the text they’re commenting on and so got an AI to summarise it. Do people not feel shame about such admissions? Do they not want to crawl under a rock and be swallowed by the earth?

Or that one Gregorian chant craze in 1994.
No one will ever believe that there was a sea shanty craze in 2020/21.

Thanks to my Yiddish classes, I was about to pronounce that one neighborhood in Tokyo 秋葉原 as "Akihabore" before I caught myself.

Seriously, when I first saw people sharing this, the first thing I checked was the date, b/c I was sure it was an old article some folks had just discovered. But no.

Also Substack was transphobic as shit even before a lot of the Nazi stuff dropped (in 2023) & folks should've left it then.

It's been quiet here lately, I admit; between the chaos of the old year ringing in the new, making almanacs for 2026 for people,  using a pickaxe to dig out my way through snowcrete in this bitterly cold winter, teaching my Hermetic Synaxis stuff to my test group (it's going fantastic with the testers!), and...well, <waves vaguely at the outside world>, it's been a bit of a busy time.

Well now, would you look at that? A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality.
