I’ve been sitting in a plane on the tarmac for about three hours now due to mechanical issues, and they just announced that they are going to try, no joke, turning the plane off and then on again.

Truly the worst part of the AMS organizational drama is the mocking by music theorists…the world is upside down… 😞

Trying to imagine the will-to-alcohol involved in getting to the airport for a 6am flight early enough to have time to sit down at the bar for a few beers.

There was a long line for the dog therapy room at this conference, and I kept hearing applause, and it turned out that the golden retriever was playing a toy piano.

Always struck that musicologists possess some of the most sophisticated knowledge of performance possible, and many/most of us have long careers in performers as musicians or as teachers in the classroom, and yet, when it comes to performing our scholarship at a conference…utter nightmare.

First thing I see when I turn on the tv in a hotel room in Minnesota.

I’m sorry, but no victory tours for Josh Shapiro until we get a state budget. That’s his job, including the part where he figures out how to get leverage over Republicans. (A not-insignificant part of the job for higher office as well.)
I talked to @JoshShapiroPA on his victory lap, after a set of PA off-year elections that he invested in and won.

Republicans saw what they were up against and "chose to pick a different fight.”

Got into some other topics... www.semafor.com/article/11/0...
Exclusive: Shapiro rejoices after going ‘all-in’ to turn Pennsylvania bluer
The governor, universally seen as a 2028 candidate, is stepping into the limelight after a successful off-year Election Day.

Enjoying @ehphd.bsky.social’s #amsmt25 on Prince and the Sex Wars, and thinking about how Susan McClary’s scholarship was so formed by her time in Minneapolis in the 80s, and Prince, and the larger art scene, and attacks from Reaganite women activists like Lynn Cheney, then-head of the NEH.

My favorite detail of this story is RFK immediately ducking out of the room, clearly assuming that whatever happened would be pinned on him, just out of instinct.

The font on these conference badges is insanely small and I am very much a “need a quick reminder to match name and face” kind of guy. 😭

I forgot to bring a book for the plane ride to AMS, and so I am resorting to reading the last issue of JAMS which I had on my iPad—lest any of the dozen musicologists on this flight think I am reading it for pleasure.

I realize why Trump/Miller targeted Chicago—blue city in a blue state, longstanding target of racists—but choosing the Pope’s hometown also presses roughly on a very fragile joint of the Republican coalition. Hubris!
"Pope Leo said Scripture emphasizes the question that will be posed at the end of the world:

'How did you receive the foreigner, did you receive him and welcome him, or not? I think there is a deep reflection that needs to be made about what is happening'..."

Pope Leo calls for ‘deep reflection’ about treatment of detained migrants in U.S.
“Many people who have lived for years and years and years, never causing problems, have been deeply affected by what is going on right now,” Chicago-born pope says.

Looking forward to reading thinkpieces about Lily Allen and the End of Rich Lady Polyamory Discourse in Mamdani’s New York.

It is not passing judgment one way or another on Suda or the rebranding to note that this seems like a deeply unhealthy Board, which is very worrisome for the arts in Philly.

I really appreciate how much my daughter (age 9) detests small children.

Nobody warns you that as you get more senior in a profession, it’s harder to catch up on work because during meetings you’re running them instead of tuning them out.

Gentleman next to me at the ballet licking his fingers to really dig into his crinkly potato chip bag to get out every last grain of salt, during the performance. 😵‍💫

I think have long established, both on social media and in my academic writing, my credentials as the whitest possible human, and I absolutely refer to any cousin older than me as aunt or uncle.
It's funny to me that this has basically led to a search for "is there a culture group that does not do this?" and so far the answer seems genuinely to be "no".
