Hi all!

Today @mitpress.bsky.social releases "Ascending Republic: The Ballooning Revival in Nineteenth-Century France."

Order it from your favorite retailer here: mitpress.mit.edu/978026254980...

Or, even better, ask your library to add it to its collections.

Any questions, just let me know!
This only makes sense if it's some kind of Wile E. Coyote scheme where the march ends at a guillotine scaffold.

This is a pretty compelling theory.
one of my strongest beliefs is that we're in our situation right now bc some of the most prominent talking heads (e.g. joe rogan, andrew schulz) are learning about politics in their 40s and 50s, instead of their teens and early 20s, and we have to go along for the ride as they learn basic things

The world is in a pretty dark place, so it's all the more important to celebrate initiatives that try to shine some light through the darkness. Today I'm proud to be part of this political community.

Every time someone posts an "AI & calculator" post an angel loses its wings, falls on a child, and the 2 decomposing corpses become a hotbed for disease—including one that gets into into the water supply, contaminating even more people who then feel like the world needs another AI & calculator post.

There are currently 58 U.S.-based "prompt engineer" jobs on LinkedIn.

Every single higher ed administrator and policy figure who claimed that they were pivoting to LLMs to prepare students for the "jobs of the future" should be forced to stare at that number for the rest of their lives.

The people of Minnesota have executed one of the most impressive civil resistance campaigns I can remember:

- Organized a city wide general strike
- Maintained nonviolent discipline amidst violence
- Mobilized 10,000s in subzero temps to protest and watch ICE
- Flipped public opinion against ICE

You know shit is bad when you have Emperor Palpatine saying things have gone too far.

(Also, if there's anything that might convince me that physiognomy is real it may just be Sepp Blatter just looking like pure evil).

So what's the deal? Can you gun down an unidentified ICE agent who barges into your house without a warrant on the basis of stand your ground legislation? Or is that law applicable only for when racists think a Black person is standing too close to them?

Honestly, my disavowal of a Whiggish view of history has little to do with historiographical debates.

It does, however, have a lot to do with the fact that for a long time I kind of assumed that many of my views would moderate as I aged, but *gestures toward everything* hasn't really allowed that.

Hilarious to see a Yale dinosaur argue that nothing has changed in academia in the past 40 years and then pitch the innovative power of... MOOCs?

Dude, we get it, you headed a MOOC initiative a decade ago that faculty were skeptical about and it failed. Move on.
