Many students I had over 25 years teaching seemed to be under the impression that "education" was similar to a fraternity hazing. Nothing but a string of meaningless and degrading tasks to be completed before being let in an exclusive club with access to the real fun & games of life.

Problem is: Neither our work culture nor our education culture incentivizes deep learning. Instead, we're incentivized to economize--to learn only what's needed to finish the task or get the answer right on the test.

People can be (and should be & are) critical after realizing what AI can do, but experience leads to better-informed and sharper critiques

seems optimistic. left wing populism (despite recommending most of Trump's positions) is still seen as a good thing. I guess it's possible left wing populism might grab a bunch of liberal positions and call that "populism" but I'm not hopeful.
