Interested in the evolutionary processes shaping genomes and plant reproduction. Excited about bringing more heart and less mind to how we do science. Hosted by the Dpt of Botany, @sciencecharles.bsky.social.

Hybridization and introgression are major evolutionary processes. Since the 1940s, the prevailing view has been that they shape plants far more than animals. In our new study (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
), we find the opposite: animals exchange genes more, and for longer, than plants

Our last work is out! led by @mjavad1991.bsky.social as first author and another smooth collaboration with @rosischmickl.bsky.social! We explore the evolution of male (pollen) and female (ovule) investment in Brassicaceae, if you're curious on the answers, it's 👇

Did you know plants can change sex expression within a single generation, and reversibly at that?🌱 What else but #epigenetics might play a role in this? 🧬 Read more in the new study published at @camphilsoc.bsky.social's Biological Reviews ⬇️

Just wrapped up an amazing time at #EMPSEB30. A truly unique event by PhD students, for PhD students packed with insightful talks and outstanding networking with future colleagues. If you’re a PhD student in evo-bio, this is the meeting you don’t want to miss! #EMPSEB30 #EvolutionaryBiology

If bottom-up approaches still needed evidence they work, #EMPSEB30 gave it. A warm atmosphere, sustainability prize, engaging DEI session, emotional workshops, alternative presentations, so many out-of-the-box things. Altogether with a really high scientific quality. Thank you @empseb30.bsky.social!
And that’s a wrap! #EMPSEB30 comes to an end in the same friendly way in which it started🙌🏽 A huge thank you to the organisers for a flawless conference and for the phenomenal final show! 🕺🏻💃🏻@empseb30.bsky.social

Happy this is out! A fun (for me) topic to reflect on: the sexual continuum in plants, the roles of epigenetics in that, and evolutionary consequences. A collaboration with Marek Slovak, Eliska Krtilova and @irissammarco.bsky.social !

We looked at what shaped the purging and fixation of TEs in populations across Arabidopsis lyrata species range. Short answer: the usual suspects, but also genomic imprinting!
