it's our fault for having genetics, really

cat genetics are a wild ride
We got to meet the most unique little boy yesterday, he’s with our partner rescue. At first glance, he looks like a regular orange tabby. But take a closer look, & what seems like grease smudges is actually (drumroll)— small mixed tortoiseshell patches!! This little guy has 1:3000 XXY chromosomes.

Watson and Crick elucidated the structure of DNA. Stop saying that they discovered DNA! This was done by another guy you probably haven't heard of! And therein lies a story. academic.oup.com/genetics/art...
Before Watson and Crick in 1953 Came Friedrich Miescher in 1869
Abstract. The story of genetics typically omits the original discovery of the molecular nature of DNA: Friedrich Miescher's 1869 discovery of the substance

"Why do *I* have these pathetic character limits??" he screams at a hapless X employee

"…well, sir, it's probably a complex mix of genetics, epigenetics, upbringing, early childhood environment…"

the joke is that genetics is just maths but with animals

I remember my genetics textbook in undergrad alluding that Watson basically stole the credit. Man was a prick.

Today we honor the life and work of James Watson, co-discoverer of the double-helix structure of DNA, has passed away. His work was a turning point in science, laying the foundation for modern genetics and transforming how we understand life at its most fundamental level.

www.bbc.com/news/world-u... For such a brilliant mind, it is disappointing that he held fast to his belief that blacks were less intelligent and therefore inferior due to genetics.

I am a little late to this, but I have also requested my name and face to be removed from @cyclinguk.bsky.social publicity due to the decision to remove trans women from their awards.

Trans women are women, gender is on a spectrum (and I did a genetics degree), and cycling is for everyone. 🏳️‍⚧️🚲❤️
Like many others, I am disappointed and angry about the decision by @cyclinguk.bsky.social to change the eligibility criteria for Women in Cycling 2025 to exclude trans women.

Sad, but an important read for anyone who works in genetics. I used a selection in my Molecular Genetics course last week when we covered the horror of eugenics and the fact that it is NOT dead
In case anyone is wondering if Watson was really THAT bad, @lpachter.bsky.social compiled a list of quotes that are absolutely not for the faint of heart.

Interesting paper in Nature Genetics on the genetics of field of study. @rosacheesman.bsky.social presented it at the EUI sone time ago. I just note that the genetics propensity to the social sciences is opposite of agriculture. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
