Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's speech today is one of the most insightful, albeit sobering, political speeches in a long time. Carney tells it as it is: "If you're not at the table you'll be on the menu."

Zelenskyy: In the coming days, we must remain extremely vigilant—Russia has prepared for a massive strike and is waiting for the moment to carry it out. Please pay close attention to air raid alerts. Every region must be ready to respond quickly and support our people.

–Oi, doc! What's in the center of the universe?
–I do not know, Mr. Cadwell, although our captain often seem to believe that it is him. Why are you bothering me with such question? I am geneticist, not astronomer. Ask Mr. Aldrich, he knows about stars, no?

I came across this pileated woodpecker this morning. While they often work on the base of trees, I was not expecting to see her head popping out from behind a pile of snow. #birds

Can people prevent earthquakes?

Nope. But we can learn to live with them.

School emailed to say that there's lice somewhere in the building.

COVID? Nope. Not a word. Flu? Ditto. RSV? Shhhh....

But lice? Yeah. Somewhere..

This is a BIG upgrade for anyone winter cycling in #BikeHfx.

Thanks again to @danp.net, for making HRM data functional and useful for folks using active transport. This tool (with suggested routes & clearance times all in one place) is much easier to use than anything official from the city.
Just pushed a big update to snowhfx.danp.net, it has a cycling / #BikeHfx mode now!

This was tricky since it involves joining 3 HRM datasets, including the one it has been using for sidewalks.

Added an About bit that hopefully explains why things show up or not.

Feedback welcome.

Good morning! Mt. Hood is visible, but not for long. Pollution from cars and wood burning fireplaces will blanket Portland Metro this week. How many days of "unreasonably warm" temps will we have this year? #StopDriving #ClimateAction

"No one here has symptoms” isn't a reliable way to rule out COVID when around 40% of infections are asymptomatic.

Please don't say this to dismiss others’ precautions

The world feels rough right now

So please enjoy this shrimp, filmed off Cozumel, Mexico. It may be a larval reef shrimp, but we don’t know what species or how long it lives or what it eats. The world is still full of wonder and beauty and mystery.
