It is so refreshing and encouraging to see thoughtful and insightful leadership in New York City.

Stanley Richards is an inspired choice for the Commissioner role. There's a lot of work to do at DOC, but this is a good place for Mayor Mamdani start.
Today, I made historic appointments who will lead key agencies and create a city where everyone can thrive.

I appointed Stanley Richards as Commissioner of DOC. Decades after he served time in our city’s jails, Commissioner Richards will now be the first formerly incarcerated person to lead them.

NEW: Today Gov. Hochul announced a measure intended to limit local law enforcement from aiding ICE's deportation agenda.

But a bill that would fully end collusion w/ ICE—and do more to protect immigrant NYers—already exists: the New York for All Act. It's time for state leadership to pass it, now.

BREAKING: Along with the NAACP New York State Conference, the Bronx Defenders, and Milbank LLP, we are suing the NYPD for disproportionately targeting Black and Latino drivers with unconstitutional vehicle searches.

This essentially amounts to stop-and-frisk on wheels, and it must come to an end.

Setting federal law to one side, state courts and state officials should ask whether, given the behavior of ICE & CBP, state officers can assist those federal agents without running afoul of state equality and/or search-and-seizure provisions.

NEW: Jan Crawford's attack on SCOTUS "corruption" narrative was its own substance-free narrative.

On Face the Nation, CBS News's chief legal correspondent went after Supreme Court critics as "dangerous." And yet, her court defense was completely lacking in specifics.

And the New York State Constitution requires no less.
“State constitutionalism makes it easy to consider Roberts Court jurisprudence white noise,” Hawaii Justice Todd Eddins wrote in a recent ruling that assailed the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority.
Hawaii Supreme Court Expands Rights of Defendants, and Once Again Rebukes SCOTUS
The justices ruled that Hawaii’s constitution requires police to record interrogations. And they vowed to protect due process for Hawaii residents—unlike, they said, the Roberts Court.

It is hard to explain—because it is sheer lunacy—how extremely different it is to hold federal officials liable for violating anyone’s constitutional rights and to get recompense for victims.

Pass laws to give the People a cause of action to hold lawless agents like Bovino accountable.
Gregory Bovino’s deposition is out. Check here and @chicagotribune.com for highlights. Throughout, Bovino was evasive and combative. In this, while being asked about a photo showing him throwing tear gas, Bovino said: “You said canister. I threw two. That’s plural.”

Before the midterms of 1866, President Andrew Johnson called his congressional opponents traitors and said they should be hanged.

Voters were so profoundly moved by his words... that they gave his opponents a supermajority in Congress, and the nation got the Fourteenth Amendment.

I’ve gotten asked repeatedly why the district courts matter if SCOTUS is going to do what it does. And it’s because the facts matter and, if nothing else, the district courts are memorializing the brutal facts and federal officials’ serial lies about their savage treatment of Americans.
Judge Ellis derides Greg Bovino as a serial fabulist who brazenly lied on the stand and seemingly considered it funny to perjure himself. cst.brightspotcdn.com/49/34/daecfb...

If you had any doubt that doing jury duty is at least as important an act of political participation as voting at the ballot box, just look at how DC’s juries have thwarted some of the federal government’s abusive prosecutions.
D.C. doesn't have statehood. We don't have voting representation in Congress. We have limited home rule that can be taken away any time. When Trump oppresses us, we have few democratic means of fighting back.

Juries are one of them. And Trump can't take that away. slate.com/news-and-pol...
