We clearly support The Year of Reading 2026 and promote Reading for Pleasure. But remember, it's also important to let kids pick what they read for fun. It doesn't matter if a book is "too easy".

Reading for pleasure should be fun. Joy and fun fuels a lifelong reader. ❤️

I'd love to see them recruit Regional Reading Ambassadors for this - children's authors sent to schools and libraries to host book clubs, run reading workshops and activities around books, make kids feel like reading isn't just another step in becoming a Good Little Employee once school is done
A National Year of Reading will take place in 2026 aimed at curtailing the reading crisis among children and young people. The initiative was launched by education secretary, Bridget Phillipson ahead of a reception to be held at 10 Downing Street 👇 #BookSky

Perfectly expressed. Any meaningful drive to re-engage children with reading for pleasure must look to invest in existing professional hubs of literature- libraries & school libraries. (And resurrect the ones we lost). And their staff.
Libraries are one of the rare places children have CHOICE without gatekeepers saying “aren’t you too old for that”/“how about a PROPER book” etc. Choice drives reading for pleasure. If we truly care about reading for pleasure, we have to protect our libraries.
