A good day to (re)share Philip Lynott: The People's Playlist. Compiled from my request for responses on social media, every song here is somebody’s favourite Lynott associated track. It kicks off with one of my all-time favourites...

Phil was a huge figure in my teenage musical years. Thin Lizzy were the headliners at Reading in 1979, but they cancelled & we got Scorpions instead (boo). I remember hearing he'd died while standing on the Clifton Suspension Bridge, quite late at night, after the pub. He's still on my playlists ❤️

It's Get Back month and it might be the right time to remember that LIB/GB is still the Beatles project that keeps on not giving. Original LIB movie with commentary by MLH? Physical release of the rooftop gig? Bonus material/extended cut of GB? The possibilities seem endless, and yet... #NIRAGAIN

In ‘In My Life’ there’s an Elizabethan piano solo – we’d do things like that. We’d say, ‘Play it like Bach,’ or, ‘Could you put twelve bars in there?’ He helped us to develop a language a little, to talk to musicians. Because I’m very shy.

We’d be saying, ‘We want it to go un, un and ee, ee,’ and he’d say, ‘Well, look, chaps, I thought of this, this afternoon, and last night I was talking to… whoever, and I came up with this.’ And we’d say, ‘Great, great, come on, put it on here.’

HAPPY CENTURY GEORGE!
John: We did a lot of learning together. George Martin had a very great musical knowledge and background, and he could translate for us and suggest a lot of things. He’d come up with amazing technical things, slowing down the piano and things like that.

Watching the classic 1983 #ThinLizzy Sight and Sound in Concert on BBC4. I recently reread @graemethomson.bsky.social's excellent #PhilLynott bio 'Cowboy Song', reduced to tears by the lamentable end of this extraordinary, gifted man. Still, the 'medley of our hit' playing on TV now is immortal. 🙏
