I am trying to think of a time when so many right-wing Christian folks have come out as strongly against Trump as they currently are re: his Rob Reiner comments.

Not the point of @gelliottmorris.com piece, but look at this divide among Republicans on social issues. Half of them look like normal people and the other half are way out of step with the rest of the country. There’s a bit of a mirror on the left but much smaller.

Fun fact: The clerical collar, as we understand it today, was invented in the mid-1800s by Protestants — not Catholics. Which is why Protestants use them.

However, U.S. Catholics adopted it in the 1880s, eventually mandating it for priests.
This is your regular reminder that not everyone who wears a clerical collar is referred to as a "priest," but, instead, often referred to as "pastor" or "minister," and that this has been true — and, in the heavily-protestant U.S., the *literal norm* — for centuries.

NEW from me: In a rare dissent in Trumpland, two conservative-leaning Catholic bishops who are tied to Trump's own religious liberty commission are criticizing the administration, voicing concerns for ICE detainees who are allegedly being denied access to Communion. religionnews.com/2025/11/04/c...
Catholic bishops tied to Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission voice criticism of administration
RNS — ‘It is important that our Catholic detainees are able to receive pastoral care and have access to the sacraments,’ Bishop Kevin Rhoades told RNS in an email.

For the unaware: these are two conservative Catholic bishops who sit on President Trump's religious liberty commission, and have been publicly warm to Trump.

Voicing open criticism of the administration on religious freedom here, even narrowly, is a break from the past few months.
Oh: Bishop Kevin Rhoades, who also sits on the commission, *also* just got back to me.

He tells me that it "is important that our Catholic detainees are able to receive pastoral care and have access to the sacraments. Their religious liberty, part of their human dignity, needs to be respected."
Oh: Reached out to Bishop Robert Barron (among others), who sits on Trump's religious liberty commission, earlier today about Broadview, and it looks like he's "brought forward … concerns" on *one* part of the religious freedom issue (i.e., communion access, not ICE shooting clergy w/pepper balls).

Faith leaders — as well as faith-based food banks — have long argued they absolutely cannot independently handle the raw number of people currently served by government food assistance programs.

They argued it again last week in Congress, calling the idea a "lie". religionnews.com/2025/10/30/f...

Trump’s voters have become like the members of the administration, delighting in the crassness and obscenity that pours out of the president and his circle whenever they are challenged. But policies suffer and the public is poorly served.

Note: while not unprecedented, it’s actually pretty rare for a sitting Catholic bishop to participate in a demonstration. It’s just not generally what Catholic bishops do.

Thus: Getting the hierarchy involved in this protest outside an ICE facility is no small thing.

Note: This is me — I asked this question.

You’ll hear me say “yes you have” here — because Johnson was already *directly asked* about one of these instances (when the Presbyterian minister was shot in the head with a pepper ball) in one of earlier shutdown press conferences.
Q: Just last week a minister was shot directly in the face with a pepper round by a DHS agent that left his face bloodied. Are you concerned that this is a religious freedom issue?

MIKE JOHNSON: I can't comment on any of those instances. I haven't seen or heard any of those videos
