US Manufacturing continues to be stuck in the mud. Increased costs, lower demand and uncertainty in the market are base causes but lower exports are a culprit as well. We continue to be in a Mfg recession in the US.

Manufacturing saw 8K job losses in December 2025
Preliminary numbers show the industry lost about 68,000 between Dec. 1, 2024, and Dec. 1, 2025. Additionally, the chemical and plastic and rubber product sectors lost the most jobs last month.

PPI increased in Dec by .5%. The largest jump since July and potentially a sign that inflation might be on the rise. Tariff costs are one of the culprits and after 25 had reduced inflation from 24 but the trend does look to be trending up.

Economic news not negative right now overall, but job news is getting pretty tough. Layoffs are up and unemployment looks like it will rise as companies abandon the "just hold on to our employees" strategy.

The job market has been stable though subdued in the past few months but it appears that layoffs are going to start coming. In Jan, Amazon announcing 16K, Pinterest, Expedia, Shopify and Oracle are among the list.

In Jan, Consumer Confidence declined to the lowest level since May of 2014. The slight improvement in Dec seems like a blip now as people feel that jobs are hard to get and inflation is still rising. Personal savings are also quite low.

Lots to dig into with this one but the "1 in 5 workers globally believes artificial intelligence will have no impact on their jobs" finding is more telling to me because 4 out of 5 do believe that it will have an impact...

Oil industry in the US is pumping as fast as it ever has, prices per-barrel have risen and demand has not taken a huge hit but jobs in the industry are tough to find. When we passed $45 a barrel jobs used to follow but not anymore.

KPMG's labor study shows that Travel Nurses are more economical than initially thought. This is why the staffing business has thrived through the years. Once you add in all the costs of employment, hiring perm employees is quite costly.

Started 2025 with a lot of conflicting economic trends. 2026 is starting that way as well. Confidence in the economy and in the job market continues to fall while unemployment remains low. Overall trend, "jobs are hard to get".

CPI remains flat and inflation held steady in Dec. Food prices jumped 3.1% last month, accelerating from a 2.6% increase in November. Ground beef prices jumped 15.5% compared with a year earlier, while coffee surged 19.8% and bananas rose 5.9%.

Staffing slips in Dec as 25 ended on a flat note. Temp jobs as a percentage of total employment was little changed. Total staffing hours only down 1% year to year. Staffing is a watermark for employment and I hope this is a positive sign.

Job growth has declined to functionally zero over the last few months, with unemployment & broader metrics of underemployment both rising to some of the highest levels since early COVID.

Jobs numbers this morning continue to paint a slowing job market in the US. Companies are hanging on to employees as well so unemployment is falling while jobs numbers remain depressed. Nov numbers revised lower as well.

Private payrolls rose in Dec. Healthcare and service industry jobs are the gainers and manufacturing and good producing industries dropped 8K. Nearly all of the gains came from med sized companies.

Job opening continue to drag as we came to the end of 2025. Through Nov companies tapped the breaks on hiring but with fewer people leaving their current roles, we have a stable job market. Unemployment holding but few companies hiring.
