Some of the Australian Jewish people are serious about their defence of real human-rights for Palestinians (and all people). They have faced a gross attack from Zionist groups, Nazi trolls, and the Murdochracy.
For those of you who don't know me, it is a pleasure to e-meet you. I'm Max Kaiser, Executive Officer of the Jewish Council. I'm writing to you today with an update on the waves the Jewish Council and our allies made as we opposed Israeli President Herzog's visit. In the last seven days an enormous number of people and institutions have worked extremely hard to try to delegitimise our Jewish identity including Liberal Senator Dave Sharma (former Ambassador to Israel), Israeli Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, spokespeople from a large number of pro-Israel Australian Jewish institutions, and Sky News host Chris Kenny. I was, unfortunately, not remotely surprised to see these tired attacks being levelled against our movement. I was also not surprised that we were targeted by antisemitic trolls online. The Jewish Council is regularly subjected to antisemitic harassment and threats, many of them serious enough to report to the police. But I was genuinely shocked to see the antisemitic abuse we faced weaponised and amplified by pro-Israel Jewish groups, the Liberal Party and the right wing media. This week more than 1000 Jewish people bravely signed our open letter denouncing Israeli President Herzog's visit. Given the portrayal of Herzog's visit by our political leaders as being in support of the Jewish community, it's important for Jewish people to be able to take a public stand. We have the right to speak up and say that hosting an alleged war criminal in the aftermath of the Bondi massacre is not being done in our names. While we were collecting signatures for that open letter, we were targeted by groups of Pro-Israel and Nazi trolls who submitted a large volume of fake, highly offensive names. I personally spent more than three quite distressing hours doing my best to remove those names the night before the open letter was due to be printed in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. Unfortunately, half a dozen fake names managed to slip through our vetting processes. This included obscure historical references which were not possible for us to pick up in such a short timeframe. We are frequently called 'anti-Jew' or 'disloyal' by Pro-Israel activists. Now they were making this same, deeply offensive point by trolling our open letter with the names of Jewish Nazi collaborators. Along with this trolling we have faced a coordinated campaign of vile hateful comments and emails this week calling us Holocaust collaborators and worse. None of this stopped Newscorp, who had an absolute field day. Rather than denouncing the Neo-Nazis and Pro-Israel trolls who targeted the Jewish Council, they blamed us for the attack and paraded the awful fake names as a way to try and silence the voices of more than 1000 real Jewish people who opposed Herzog's visit. Despite the fact that I have the title of Executive Officer, I am not a paid member of staff at the Jewish Council. In fact, the Jewish Council doesn't have any employees. I am extremely proud of the fact that we are a volunteer-lead movement of Jewish people who dedicate their time 口分 am extremely proud of the fact that we are a volunteer-lead movement of Jewish people who dedicate their time and energy to standing with the Palestinian people, and defending human rights for all. But this week, I found myself wishing we had a highly trained, full-time team of political, media and legal experts to stand behind the Jewish people who bravely signed our open letter denouncing Herzog's visit. It's one thing to face separate attacks from neo-Nazis, pro-Israel actors and Newscorp. It's another thing entirely when attacks from these different groups all come at once. To our Jewish supporters, this week the Israel lobby invested significant resources into denying your existence, dismissing us as a "microbe" and "irrelevant" in the words of the ECAJ. If that were true, they wouldn't be expending so much energy in attacking our Jewish identity. To our Jewish supporters and non-Jewish allies, if you are in a position to do so, please consider making a regular contribution to the Jewish Council. Regular monthly donations allow us to plan our campaigns and gives us the resources we need to fight back against those seeking to silence Jewish voices speaking against the actions of the Israel government.
