We had these two striking 8 TeV dijet pairs events in Run 2, resulting in a 3.8sigma local excess

Unfortunately haven't seen any in Run3 yet 🫤

Very cool new analysis!

Due to the crazy data volume, standard data streams throw away >99.99% of collisions at the LHC

But what if we didn't have to?

For the first time CMS has performed a search using data processed on hardware in real time (40 million / sec) !

Great thread!
A few years ago, four theorists identified new symmetries in a two Higgs doublet model. These are not intuitive physical symmetries, like reflection over a mirror, but are abstract ways in which the parameters can be transformed and the model preserved. arxiv.org/abs/2306.02410

"In this letter, we have applied goofy transformations
to the SM, thereby also extending them to include the
fermion sector. We have shown that all SM interactions
are invariant under the appropriate goofy transformations, while the Higgs-mass term is forbidden."

Welcome to the September/October edition of #CERNCourier

In this edition the future meets the past: the ongoing update to the European Strategy for Particle Physics, the outstanding discoveries of 1964, what may be the last chapter of the quarkonia story and much more.

If you liked the recent CMS anomaly detection search, check out this paper for more details & validations!

I particularly like this 'rediscovery' of boosted top quarks with anomaly detection!

Happy this paper is finally on arxiv!

A fun mix of physics (jet substructure) being used to calibrate the performance of ML algorithms (jet taggers) to get proper uncertainties

Now a standard CMS tool for interpreting searches for exotic jets, used in multiple analyses

So now it looks g-2, W mass, and R(K) are dead as anomalies

Anyone have a favorite alive anomaly?

R(D)? X17? (bolstered by recent PADME results 👀)

Wouldn't it be nice to fit in high dimensions using a data-driven background estimate? By using generative ML models you can!

We showcase this on an example di-Higgs measurement, performing a 5D fit, (can probably go higher with more work)
Data-Driven High-Dimensional Statistical Inference with Generative Models
Crucial to many measurements at the LHC is the use of correlated multi-dimensional information to distinguish rare processes from large backgrounds, which is complicated by the poor modeling of many o...

Weakly supervised anomaly detection with event-level variables

CMS is seeing an unexpected excess of top quarks in their data. But what is causing it?

Signs are pointing to 'toponium' an unstable bound state of two top quarks, which was previously thought impossible to form!
