We need more orgs to realize as advocates we want to share our story, BUT it’s also reliving a trauma in life.

We want to open up, but don’t be so quick to move on or close the door. #Cansky

Very sad news of the passing of Jo Taylor. Jo worked tirelessly to improve the lives of breast cancer patients and to improve care and treatment for MBC patients. RIP Jo.

Agreed. It's a denial of what we're going through. Lying on the bathroom floor at 3am not knowing how I'm going to stay alive is not inspirational.

Calling someone “inspirational” can be just as dehumanising as an insult.

Interested in sharing about your experience of living with MBC? The Metastatic Breast Cancer Alliance has launched a new initiative designed to educate the public on the experience of living with MBC and I would like to invite anyone who is living with MBC or their person is living with MBC 1/3

So much this 👇
Cancer sucks, don’t allow someone’s toxic positivity make you feel “bad” for feeling down.

Cancer is unfair. It’s okay to feel down. It’s also okay to realize your feelings go in ebbs and flows. #Cansky

There needs to be more support for patients after active treatment, surviving is difficult, our lives change and what was normal no longer exists. It's never over with cancer 👇
Cancer completely hijacks your life. Your mental health, your relationships, your finances, your entire life is upended and nothing, not even yourself feels safe anymore. I wish there was more talk about the "after" of cancer. #cansky #kidneycancer #cancer

Tests are not always an unalloyed good thing.

Of course you should get tested if you’re worried.

But tests themselves have a negative impact: rearranging your life, the discomfort of the procedure, the anxiety of waiting for results.

As a cancer survivor it can be tricky to navigate.

At last an advert with a more realistic portrayal of cancer patients, thank you @breastcancernow.bsky.social
Yes, we do feel awful, stressed, scared, anxious. Yes we might pretend we are okay, but we're not.

"Acknowledge our pain". Yes, 100%!
There are plenty of guides about “what not to say to someone with cancer” and while I fully agree with these (and have offered my own advice on this matter) I don’t want loved ones to feel too nervous about reaching out with clumsy words. Better to do that than not be there at all.

Exactly this. There is nothing brave about it. We are not amazing and inspiring. We are trying to survive.
Calling cancer patients “brave” is dehumanising. I think this is because it puts distance between the patient and the other person. It’s not a compliment with any real meaning or recognition behind it.

“You’re so brave. I couldn’t do what you’re doing.”

But what’s the alternative?

This is a page from my book which represents the build-up of all the emotions that had accumulated during cancer treatment. During survival mode, I’d pushed them away. But a resurgence was inevitable.

Good thread on how things are after treatment. It's never over, and there are no rules. Understanding when depression hits, why it does and to find a way of getting through are not easy. #FuckCancer #CanSky
I've hit the inevitable depression after finishing cancer treatment.

This is the third time out of three chances it's happened, I've been warning myself and others about this phenomenon for years, and yet I'm still surprised.

I guess I'm a slow learner about cancer in general 😂

We need something real from our loved ones when we’re going through an ordeal like cancer. We need real recognition and companionship. We need people to bear witness to our suffering.

I’ve had to remind myself of this recently, too.

I know it’s hard. That’s why it means so much.
