Does AI improve or undercut academic scholarship?

A new study finds that academics who use AI increased both the quantity & quality of their academic scholarship and it appears to reduces inequality (helping junior and non-english speaking scholars the most).

Held off, but had this same feeling last week. Call it grantsmanship or whatever, some times I am awestruck how much work goes a truly strong application.
I would *never* do this, but I periodically get the urge to reach out to a grant applicant and tell them what a joy it was to read their thoughtful, rigorous, and exciting proposal. I hope that enthusiasm comes through -- at least faintly -- in the anonymous formal critiques.

Yes and how institutions will pivot almost seamlessly to pursue it.
At what point do we find out about those topics that this administration deems worthy of research funding? Cutting, terminating, ruining careers, etc. is easy…what do you think scientists in this country should actually be working on? Can’t wait to hear…

Happy Social Work Month!

More students in #SocialWork practicums report losing weight due to food insecurity than receive any kind of $$ compensation for 400+ hours of labor.

1/4 of practicum students are at very low food security, with less than 40% of students food secure.

I’m in, but only for Joe
Maybe corny but it was helpful for me to hear Henry Rollins saying "this is not time to be dismayed, this is punk rock time, this is what Joe Strummer trained you for... You can be thunderous in your own life, to the eight people around you. That rubs off... Goodness is viral"

Superb guidance for right now. Do something.
If you're trying to figure out what to do right now, my advice is to just pick a thing that you think might be useful in some way, however small, and do it. Doing a thing leads you to doing another, bigger thing, and prepares you for that next thing.

Washington is full of rule-following valedictorians who were inspired by the West Wing and did Model UN and moot court and studied their heroes and who believe in using government to help people.

That's nice, but you need to learn how to swing on the illiterate bullies who steal lunch money.

Fully agreed. We need more people with conviction to not follow these orders
It would be fantastic if major federal institutions would acknowledge that the executive branch cannot legally unilaterally cancel or redistribute congressionally appropriated funding on ideological grounds and thus they have no legal obligation to comply with such directives

Being born into poverty negatively affects children’s behavior
Children born into poor families are more likely to act out. But children from well off families misbehave when raised in poor neighborhoods.
