Year 1 data on congestion pricing in Manhattan…

* Vehicle traffic: -11%
* Foot traffic: +3.4%
* Storefront vacancy: -0.9%
* Pollution: -22%
* Revenue for mass transit: $548M

So YES this has been a huge success.

rust seems to be insisting that i am very clear about what i am doing, which is sometimes helpful but also not always realistic

I know that Arc stands for "Atomically Reference Counted' in rust and I understand what it means but some of part of my brain still thinks of it is as a little arc boat that is protecting the data as it goes between threads

bsky.app/profile/snow...

^ this is the critique of ai water usage that makes sense to me (based on stress or abundance and in relation to specific environment and contexts), not the general averages and statistics etc.
This is absolutely true. My only tweak is that people should think about water in terms of flow, rather than stock. Almost every use of water can be “handled” in the abstract, the question is about stress or abundance, and in relation to environment and context.
All you really need to understand about water usage in the western United States is that every single use - even the ones that sound egregiously wasteful like AI data centers - rounds down to 0 compared to what irrigated agriculture uses

i love the feeling of not understanding something while writing rust, and then slowing down into the rabbit hole to understand it

mycology often feels to me like a type of queer love -- learning to know and understand and care for strange beings with needs both entirely different and similar to ones own

was radicalized by @cblgh that there is no layer of the stack that is separate from “ux” because if code is difficult to change or maintain, the *users* are not going to enjoy the *experience* of the software becoming out of date & unmaintained over time and unresponsive to feature requests

is there any website/e-mail list listing any and all tech job postings from not siliconvalley/VC tech organizations? or something similar?

The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

at the gym, various machines and instruments, no clear directive exactly what you are supposed to be doing here, tens of people moving around doing various things, no explanation needed, if there is a common denominator it is a secret

is there a service anyone likes where you can easily buy phone numbers with monero? ideally can also use the number in your browser and not have to ensure your phone is secure

this seems like the necessary workaround for all the surveillance services that bottom out to requiring a phone number

dreaming of permacomputing software that is so simply designed and bug-free that it quietly supports system administrators to not think about it, to sleep at night, to think about other things, like a healthy microbiome invisibly supporting digestion or support from the ancestors

wondering about "terminal-emulators" / "permacomputing-graphical-application-frameworks" thats can run tuis and terminal programs, but also can run programs that have fewer weird keyboard/mouse quirks than tuis and support images... like i sort of love tuis but they also seem deranged
