A lovely read ahead of #TheGradingConference in a few weeks.

I especially loved "a bunch of quantitative legalese masquerading as pedagogy" as a turn of phrase—perhaps because it so accurately describes where I, and probably many others, started.
"The work of ungrading is to push back on the culture of grades and quantitative assessment that reinforces hierarchies between students and teachers, while reducing both to a set of crude (often inscrutable) data points." www.jessestommel.com/the-practice...
The Practice of Ungrading
Ungrading inspects the inequities of schooling, asks hard questions of the structures of our schools, and offers a critique of the labor conditions for teachers at all levels of education.

Hey west coast math friends,

Do I know anyone in Sacramento, Chico, Redding, Eugene, or Portland?

I’m planning a solo trip up to WA in a moving van next month and I’d love to make a couple stops along the way.

Educational research funded by the NSF is a threat to authoritarianism and plutocracy.

Our work details how to shift schools away from being sites of social reproduction to places of care, social mobility, critical citizenship, and liberation.

People need to realize the filibuster wasn’t meant to have a practical effect but to be a symbol and a rally point. Beating Thurmond’s record isn’t a hollow victory at all.
People keep saying Senator Booker's filibuster was meaningless and people who were moved by it are naive and gullible but I lived and organized in a south where this record stood and slavery and Jim Crow cast a long shadow and I tell you Booker taking that record means something.

So far, the most fun I had was saying "well, in alien math they don't have base-10 blocks. Instead, they have base-10 blocks." 🤣
As a fun Friday math activity, we are doing some Alien math. Teacher friends, I offered this slide to generate some thinking with their first task of writing the first 100 numbers. Would you say the two sentences are correct?

Exactly this
And, frankly, it sucks how the deficit perspective of special education "supports" are primarily intended to get kids to "fit in", to learn, perform, and behave in normative ways rather than make the system responsive to the kids they're serving.
And if I have to hear the phrase "do his work" in relation to schooling for 6yos I'm going to lose my damn mind.

See, learning isn't a problem my son has. It's the construction of school-as-work that he can't tolerate. The message for 1st graders is: school is work, and work sucks, get used to it!
