Transfem writer, working on original magical girl project and Ranma 1/2 fanfic. Big fan of lesbians, gay women, and GENDER. Outright anti-fan of TERFs and SWERFs.

Apparently I'm also into Canadian politics now.

Me: I did nothing today.

Partner: You read two and a half books, wrote three and a half book reviews, called the insurance people, and had a doctor's appointment.

Me: yeah what's your point

For a novella that seems actively uncomfortable with being read as a horror novel, Bedek's latest gets shockingly disturbing towards the middle.

One of the most interesting fusions of the romance and horror genres I've ever read.

I think this runs into the problem that reviews and critique are seen as buying advice more than anything. It's not supposed to engage with what the author is doing, it's entirely for the consumer.

There's a place for that, but when it's the only form of critique most people experience...
i was just talking to a fellow trans writer about this: recognizing that when my book comes out next year, most reviews will be infuriatingly shallow, "i liked it" "i didn't like it" "here's some checkboxes" whereas actually engaging with what i'm doing (or failing to do!) is what i want, a kindness

Beth you're amazing but this is a bit of a "draw the rest of the owl" moment.

Cause like.

How.
My #1 tip for generating word of mouth is to create word of mouth for other people first.

Teach yourself how to market by marketing your friends' books first!

You'll gain essential practice, generate community goodwill, make author friends to help with the writing process, and it pays dividends.

Excellent piece, fantastic writing. Wish it never could have existed.

With everything going on, self-care is more important than ever.

So a reminder that self-care sometimes means asking hard questions about your medication regime and whether or not they're working for you.

If you wish your meds did more or you feel like they don't work, try something else.
