I genuinely have no idea how to convey this to the American people, but I think the biggest impediment to any kind of immigration reform is that people are convinced that "legal" and "illegal" are immutable, intrinsic categories instead of a rapidly-shifting arbitrary constellation of regulations.

The group bike ride for Alex Pretti is about to depart in Minneapolis, stopping at his memorial, then Renee Good’s, and finishing at the VFW. If you can join, hop on anywhere. It’s a warm 17° & sunny!

I’ve never seen this many cyclists for a group ride. ⚡️✊🏽⚡️🚲⚡️✊🏽⚡️ #RIPPretti

It’s not particularly sophisticated but I kind of think that the most straightforward way to understand trumpism is that we have a morally depraved group of fascists who have successfully persuaded a significant chunk of the public to accept their psychological projections as reality

I think it is worth revisiting "it's not fascism" defenses like this one from 2024.

Worth reading.

Barton Swaim, on whether Americans elected a fascist:
&
Lord Denning, on whether he had sent 6 innocent men to prison:

"this horrible possibility, this Appalling Vista, would be extremely horrible if it were true, therefore it can't be true."

Musgrave: "look out the window."
Is Trump fascist? One Wall Street Journal columnist believes to ask the question is un-American--how could one question the judgment of the American people? To do so raises the appalling prospect that everything might be broken. I discuss why it matters:

We need to talk about the rise of "smol bean fascism" where you have all the guns and the immunity but the really scary people are the ones with whistles and phone cameras and they're giving you generational trauma and ptsd by filming you killing people for no reason

One thing I found deeply moving about resistance in the Twin Cities was the universalism of loving your neighbor, the philosophy driving the opposition to the ICE/BP invasion. I couldn't help but notice the contrast with the blood and soil-ism of Miller and Vance. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced the Democrats have to push their hand immediately. The parallels with the delays and subsequent failures after January 6th are blaring warning signs about what will happen if they don’t go after the issues with ICE and CBP at the root RIGHT NOW.

Trump backing down to public pressure is a good thing. But let's be clear. Noem, Miller, Bovino, etc. all followed his lead. He called protesters terrorists. He dehumanized Somali immigrants. He lied about Good and Pretti. He owns all of it.

He'll also probably change his mind tomorrow.
ABC: Noem said Pretti committed an act of domestic terrorism. Stephen Miller labeled him a domestic terrorist. Does the president agree?

LEAVITT: I have not heard the president characterize Mr Pretti in that way

This reads to me as Fetterman feeling a need to pay lip service, but he still says "I will never vote to shut our government down" and "I reject the calls to defund or abolish ICE." The fact that he feels a need to pay lip service is new, though, maybe a sign that he can read the changing winds.
FETTERMAN joins fellow Democrats in seeking DHS changes via government funding: “I want a conversation on the DHS appropriations bill and support stripping it from the minibus.”
