This #FossilFriday marvel at the presence of Astropanax leaves & pollen in Ethiopia 21.73 million years ago, found in the Mush Valley, providing the earliest evidence for Araliaceae on the African continent! (around the time when ancient rhinos & horses began to evolve)🌍🧪

SINGER is a fantastic method for ARG Inference and based on some of the analyses I've seen definitely the best trade off between accuracy and sample size

It was a long journey – 16 months from initial submission to acceptance. Is it just me, or has peer review gotten more arduous lately? 4+ rounds of review isn't so unusual these days...

Sampling the Azorean #ivy, #Hedera azorica, sometimes the unique native plant species in vegetation. Similar to H. canariensis in leaves, quite distinct by its stellate multiangular hairs, a feature that shares with its sister-species, the common ivy (Hedera helix)
Very common entire heart-shaped leaves form the vegetative phase (similar to those of H. canariensis but more coriaceous, rare in H helix in which they rarely are coriaceous) Other common vegetative leave shape, in this case 5 lobed-leaf (a shape that also occurs in H canariensis but less frequency as well as in H helix, though less coiraceous in this case), also very hardy Typical entire heart-shaped leaves from the reproductive phase (also frequent in H canariensis, rare in H helix) Not the best photo, but stellate multiangulate hairs typical of H azorica and H helix, quite distinct from the scale-like hairs typical of H canariensis

Although many invertebrates and other less-charismatic groups are key for ecosystem service provision, they and their functions are rarely included in conservation strategies. Benoit Guénard, @achughes.bsky.social et al show how funding largely goes to charismatic rather than threatened species 🌐🧪🪲

Mediante el análisis de isótopos de cloro en la sal depositada en el lecho del Mediterráneo, se ha podido establecer cuándo y cómo desapareció el 70% del agua de este mar: 35.000 años de restricción del flujo de agua y aislamiento total durante 10.000 años.
