Oxygen supersaturation has been reported to protect aquatic animals from heat waves. We tested this in a large collaborative experiment on many species of fish and crustaceans. Our new paper in @plosbiology.org shows that the effect of hyperoxia on thermal tolerance is negligible. Unfortunately.

Our new study: territorial cichlids ramped up metabolic rate around conspecifics, while cardinal tetras showed little change. And only in tetras did individual sociability relate to metabolic rate. Energetic consequences of “social living” depend on social system. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

With just 5 years remaining to protect 30% of our land for nature, we urgently need to boost nature in our National Parks and National Landscapes.

Any weakening of laws protecting these vital areas for nature recovery would be a serious backwards step.
